Every electronic device in my house has 1 mortal enemy....

Dust.

Just take a look at these pictures.

This is my CPU's Fan and Heatsink...covered...in....dust.

It now sounds and runs a whole lot better. There is so much dust in the air in my room right now i'm going to sleep downstairs....

I really wish I had one of those Ionic Breeze things...

I recently took my computer outside and used up about two of those to clean out the insides... mind you I hadn't cleaned it since I got it five years ago.

That and a vacuum work like a charm.

Considering I live with two cockatoos, and 3 cockatiels. I have an excess amount of dust in the household. The dust accumulation that you show is the equivalent of one month that I experience.

I'll post images tomorrow, when I'm sober.

Wow, I just checked my heatsink today..

I can actually lay my fingertips on it and not have them get burnt! Before I dusted it, it was scorching ass hot. Now it's cool to the touch (I mean like, cool, not luke warm, not slightly warm, cool. Cold steel). Pretty unbelievable when you left your computer on for a week straight and the heatsink for the CPU is cool to the touch. I wonder what my case will feel like once I get my NVidia 6600 GT :D

Sorry bout the noob question but how do you take of the fan?

Depends on your Computer, CPU, CPU fan, heatsink etc.

Usually on most fans to seperate the fan from the heatsink there are usually 4-6 screws that can be unscrewed with a standard phillips-head screwdriver.

Removing the whole fan and heatsink is a different story. Usually there is a little clip holding the heatsink to the processor. Generally you can just unclip that and remove it to reveal your processor.

Take it off like MachOne did to reveal his heatsink. Because my fan was pretty dusty last time I checked so that must mean my heatsink is pretty dirty too.

Just be sure to put the fan back on before you start your computer up again :)
Computer meltdowns are not fun :nervous:

AND MAKE SURE THE JUMPER CABLE IS CONNECTED.

I've had people clean their fans, reinstall it back, and not put the jumper cable on.

Obviously, their results weren't pretty.

now was that because the fan was really hot? the fan was spinning really fast? ...sharp bladed fan or a combination of the three?? (ive never tried it so im just curious...dont really have a desire to try this)
