I was playing Forza 4 (yes, I was playing Forza; I like both GT5 and Forza) and I got to thinking. Driving on a track is one thing, but what are some real life roads, or places I wish had roads running through them, that I would LOOOOOVE to drive on? You know. Wake up early on a beautiful sunrise. Go to the garage and fire up "that car" your wife (for those of you who are married) doesn't think the family needs, and head off to those canyon roads, or back roads snaking through the woods, or that strip along the beach, or those gorgeous mountain passes.

Y'all know what I'm talking about??? THAT road you've always wanted to run. Or THAT place you WISH had a windy road going through it.

These thoughts actually started for me while I was playing NFS the Run. There was this one road going through a nation park here in the US. I was in a Ford Mustang GT500 just pushing it through those canyons and behind a water fall. I got to thinking, besides the fact that the games physics really suck, that this would be an AWESOME road to run in GT. There were some other roads like the plains states with the thunderstorms in the distance, the industrial areas that had at least 3 miles of "drift please" all OVER it, and the twisty roads through N. Virginia's Skyline Drive in the fall. The latter Top Gear (the original) went there and stated it has got to be one of the greatest roads they have ever seen and never got to flog due to the stupidity of the speed limits (avg. speed limit on that road through the mountains is 35mph).

But you get my point (I hope). I hope and wish PD fosters this into GT6. Having great tracks is one thing, but never forget that one of the greatest automotive enthusiasts' passions is just getting out on that road and DRIVING. No clock, no competition, no worries, no cares. Just you, the road, and the scenery. Nailing those perfect rev matches, hitting the right gear on those sweepers, the engine noise, the tire squeal, the rock pings hitting the under side and rockers, the heart beating in your throat ... and for those of you married, the cell phone constantly ringing with "the wife" ring tone wondering where you're at.

El Capitan was the closest track to this, IMHO, in the whole GT series. Forza has some good ones (Maple something, Burnese Alps, Fukaido (not sure on spelling), etc.) and NFS had some of the best fictional roads.

All in all, I just really wish GT captures this.

... at least give me that road in Romania (I think it was) that the Top Gear crew went to. James "BROUGHT THE RIGHT CAR!!!!!!!"

Chime if you know what I'm talking about.

Yeah I saw that thread, but free roam is not exactly what I'm talking about. I'm talking about that stretch of road that you wish you could hit with your dream car. There is difference between free roaming some streets and blasting through that mountain pass with a Porsche Boxter S.

Case in point, there is this road called Skylike Drive in Virginia where I live. It's through the mountains and woods. The speed limit there is at best 35mph and SLOW site see-ers all along the way. Did I mention deer also? If you saw, as a driving enthusiast, you would just drop your jaw at just THE THOUGHT of this road being open to you, and only you for just half a day. Trying to fulfill that in GT might be more difficult that it sounds now that I think about it.

Fujimi Kaido in Forza is close to what you're saying actually. I personnaly love that road and it's a mountain pass like you're describing.

I agree with jbanton tho, this could have fit in the free roam thread just nicely, anyway I'm no mod ~

Why do you guys insist on making something out of a passing comment that bears no real relevence to the topic? It's almost as if you'll burn if someone mentions the word Forza.

OP if you have a gaming PC you might want to check out Project CARS by Slighty Mad Studios. It's in alpha at the moment but it's already brilliant and they have recently added some coastal roads for you to race on.

"Coastal roads"? we are straying ever closer to the link I mentioned in the 2nd post :(

What we need is for the track creator to be A) more robust so you can really layout the track you want instead of getting a random assortment of often uninspiring courses, and B) a link to Google Maps or similar that would allow you to take "that" stretch of road your talking about and make it a track.

When I was a kid they built a new dam for flood control near me. They put in several boat ramps and built recreation facilities on the resulting lake with a very twisty up and down road encircling it. Every morning I drive most of the way around it making my deliveries and I think about how much fun it would be to race on it in GT5 and how incredibly stupid me and my friends were as teenagers who raced around it in any car we could get our hands on. Lost two friends there when the 3/4 ton pickup truck they were racing went out of control and crashed.:(

Racing or even running hard on real roads is dangerous even with the best safety measures. But being able to run your favorite fantasy cars on those same roads would be awesome. (and the only thing that might get hurt is your feelings when someone else beats you on your "home" track.)👍👍

It's just poking a bit of fun, relax.

No, this isn't anything like what you're talking about.

This is still about racing as fast as you can, but on open roads. You're talking about driving normally at normal speeds with traffic etc.

Normal speeds, with traffic? Who gave you that idea?

I do however see now you're talking about racing as opposed to freely driving. :)

I think the OP was referring to racing or hot laping at speed with no traffic.

That's why I responded to this thread. I'm not interested in street racing with traffic which seems to be the main idea of the so called free roam concept. Public roads do get used for legitimate legal racing in real life, so being able to turn some of your favorites into tracks would be great in game.

As was I. I was referring to the free roam concept with that comment. The tracks on Project cars are public roads closed for speed runs or racing, no traffic.

Sorry Simon I misunderstood your intent there.

Street racing, with traffic?? This misconception means my OP needs an update :(...

From what I understand you're not talking about street racing with traffic rather driving on open public roads as you would in real life, mostly legally following traffic laws?

The original concept was an island specifically created to cater to the various types of driving styles that the Gran Turismo uses/ enjoys. Disregarding other features, the free-roam was supposed to be an area which would only be used by Gran Turismo players.
Basically a Gran Turismo free-roam, no outsiders, just Gran Turismo players being given the chance to drive, (as opposed to race) on roads that have all been set aside for them :(.

Have you ever been to Santorini? It's an island at the mediterranean sea formed by a sunken volcano, sun set is stunning there and so are the narrow roads, maybe total of 80 kilometers. I'd sure like to fire up my LFA '10 there :')

Isn't route x a big island? You could pretend it is.

But then you'd just drive in circles essentially. What the OP wants (and what I want too) is a twisty mountain road that we can race freely on.

That's why we need to push the online world free-roam concept; we brainstormed for something like Stelvio Pass to feature on the island, as well as some other good hillside roads that can capacitate for Touge racing.

Last summer I was coming home from our family summerplace in the middle of the night driving on a forest road with constant corners and crests and sometimes beautiful lakes visible from between the trees, had good music on and although I was only doing 100km/h tops and in the least sporty car on earth (a 1988 Volvo 740, estate, with a carburated engine no less) it was still one of the best driving experiences I've had.

The problem is that if I was doing the same in the game, but going twice as fast in a Lamborghini Diablo, I doubt it'd feel even close as good unless I was racing someone else. The sensation of JUST driving doesn't translate well enough from the game to be exciting.

What I'm trying to say is, it's much simpler to take a car - and I mean any old banger you might have - and find a good road and give it the beans. After I've had my license for years and especially paid a sum that feels like millions in gas, I rarely get to just go for a drive for enjoyment, but getting that excitement even for just a little bit can put a smile on your face for days.

Of course I'm not objecting if PD decide to add some of these roads (Stelvio pass, Gunsai touge... list is never ending) but you don't need a perfect scenario to enjoy driving in real life. Take a look at your map, try to find a stretch that's close to you, take a car and indulge.

In the meantime, you could always try to cook up a road with the course generator, and it's possible to get some decent results out of that too (best results when running in the dark).

@ OP: course maker Toscana, 2 sectors, complexity 10. Set the time to 20.00 ;)

I agree that it would be amazing to get replicas of real roads, or just more course maker themes. Hell, if they add one Japanese touge style road I'll be beyond the moon. Sadly these kinds of tracks requires very high level of details in the scenery, so I don't think we can expect PD to cook one up anytime soon :(

Best thing they can do is bring back Costa di Amalfi, Citta di Aria and El Capitan back. Even if it's in the same quality as Cote de Azur I'll still take it 👍

One of the earliest NFS, if not the first (yes, I know I'm a dating myself here) ran on highway 101 along the Oregon coast. My brother and I put hundreds of miles on that stretch. I'd love to have it back.

I've done it in real life (but not "at speed", sigh) and its amazing.

I'd also like highway 6 running to Tillamook. Looks alot like the shots of Top Gear BR when they went in search if the best road to drive on. I followed a milk truck semi home from the coast last year. This guy must drive that road every day. I could easily keep up in my Subby but I doubt most people could. He hit every apex perfectly, even the blind ones. It was like watching dHolland or Eclipsi's ghosts, but with a semi truck. I love driving behind professionals who know their stuff.

Come out and run Hagg Lake with me some morning when I'm making my deliveries.:D Been driving the same 100 miles of back roads every morning for over a year now. There's been days I think I have run it in my sleep.:lol:
If it wasn't for wildlife and log trucks I could almost run it blindfolded.

Oh and NFS:Pro Street has PIR as one of the main tracks.👍👍

No, we don't. A whole online world free roam area like TDU would take a long, long time and isn't really doable on top of GT as we know it. PD creating one or two tracks of that style is very possible.

Yep, a 20 mile stretch of track through Yellow Stone or 15 miles worth through the Alps. There is a stretch of highway coming out of Texas, El Paso, I would absolutely LOVE to noise polute with a Hemi-Cuda.
