john paul was only elected in the 70's or something. i forget exactly when.

i wanted to meet the pope. he was a great person. what made him great was the fact that he traveled so much...more than any other pope before him, and brought peace to so many people in so many countries. i respect that his missions always had peace as the prime objective, rather than imposing god on others. he was just a good person......simple as that. to forgive one who tried to take your life says something as well...

i think that through his active and outgoing spirit, he was able to bring out hope and faith in everybody. his very nature gave people peace, and inspired them to live with the courage to seize their days to come.

i truly respect the pope....though, he was the only pope i have known, he set a standard by which everyone in the world could live by, no matter what age, culture, or religion...and all we can do is hope that others will follow where he left off.

RIP - Pope John Paul II.

I have great respect for this man considering I don't believe religons.

I hated how the other times in the hospital, they said he wouldn't recover, but the Pope proved their asses wrong and recovered.

Didn't he even get a ride in a Ferrari F1 or have something to do with one?
Man, this Pope kicked ass. 👍
He was given a model of one by the team, early this year or late last year, I'm not sure. Here is a picture of the event... It's a VERY COOL model!

I love the look on his face.

1 thing.
When the Pope's funeral comes, is it public? Or is it kept in secret and only attended by Cardinals?

Stuff the pope did: recognized the state of israel, changed catholic views on Jews from "needing to be punished for crucifying jesus" to something a little more tolerant, was instrumental in the defeat of communism, traveled more than any other pope and brought his message of love and forgiveness to the world.

How they elect the pope: they lock the cardinals in the cistine chapel until they elect the next pope. They burn the secret ballots after they have been counted. White smoke out of the chimney means a new pope has been elected, black smoke means the ballot didn't result in a pope, so they need to pray/talk and then cast another ballot. Also, it used to be a 2/3 majority was needed to elect a pope, but PJPII changed it so that a pope can be elected with a simple majority.

The pope's funeral will be public, with most of the leaders of the world attending. I believe his body is being displayed already so that mourners can come and pay their last respects.

You must be blind and deaf if you hadn't noticed that the pope died by now.

It's been all over the TV ever since it happened.

I'm not really religious, but I come from a Catholic family, and go to a Catholic college, so I do realize the impact that Pope John Paul II has had on people's lives. He did a great job, and I can only hope that his successor can fill his very big shoes.

Key question - why was he Pope "John Paul" II, when his real name was Karol Wojtyla and he was Polish?

I don't know for sure, but it's probably because Karol isn't the name of one of the apostles, and John and Paul were both apostles.

Leo, Benedict, Innocent and Pious weren't names of apostles either.

I think it was something to do with who he took over from - The pope before him was called John Paul, and only lasted 30 days or something, so he changed his name to John Paul

All cardinals have to pick a name. His real name as you stated was Karol Wojtyla. He was born is Poland and lived there for most of his life. He was the first Non-Italian pope, which suprised many people when they picked him in 1978. I feel great, being Polish, having someone who changed history forever, in a good way.

Firstly, as far as I know, it's only a select group of 117-118 Cardinals under the age of 80 that will be allowed to vote (I say 117-118 Cardinals since apparently the Pope kept the name of one Cardinal a secret). Also, if they can't elect a new Pope (I believe it's a 60% majority that is needed), a plume of black smoke will come out of the chimney. And although history suggests the next Pope will be Italian, there is talk that they may elect an African as the next Pope.

The 256th successor to John Paul II will be taken in to consideration by 183 cardinals. Every cardinal has the right to take part in the pre-Conclave discussions on the succession but only those under the age of 80 can vote and these guys are called the cardinal electors.

There are 117 cardinal electors and they're not young! 80 are over the age of 70; 101 are over 65; only 6 are under 60. They have an average age of 71.

They will all eventually decide on who the new pope will be behind closed doors in Rome. Few of them know other cardinal electors and rely on "kingmakers" (you've probably heard of Cardinal Ratzinger in the news - he's one. Murphy-O'Connor is another) to help them to decide for whom to cast their vote. The Conclave will open between the 17th and 22 april. (Concalve means "with keys", and is a Latin pun: they meet to find the next man to carry "the keys of St Peter"; and while they are doing it they will be locked in).

The modern world is showing itself with the soon to be Concalve. Today's cardinals have a little more freedom and have no serious deprivation like before. Historically, if a decision wasn't met in 3 days the two course meals would be cut to one and after five more days it would be bread, water and wine until a new pope emerged.

Before, they were literally imprisoned and were sometimes unable to agree for weeks. Apparently, one Conclave in the papal town of Viterbo lasted nearly three years without a conclusion. The people of the town got so pissed off that they stormed the palace and ripped the roof off! :trouble: Black smoke means that the election continues and white means that the pope is chosen. The townspeople of Viterbo must have seen a lot of black smoke!

I also read that the ancient cermonies of old might still take place today. You'll like these...

If the Camerlengo (chamberlain of the Vatican, Cardinal Leonardo Martinez Somalo) did indeed stick to the ancient ceremonies then the John Paul II would have been tapped three times on the head with a silver hammer and called out in his baptismal name just to make sure he was really dead!

The other one which catches out the she-male cardinals is that the new pope will be made to sit on a special chair while the Camerlengo gropes to feel his testicles, to be 100% sure they have not elected a woman by mistake! Riighhhhhhhhht.

Evo, I think the black cardinal you are referring to is Francis Arinze of Nigeria who surprisingly isn't a spring chicken either coming in at the ripe old age of 72. He's a hater of homosexuality so this could count against him.

RacyBacy - That's presumably to avoid a repeat of the famous "Pope Joan" incident.

But why did he pick THAT name?

Well because the pope before him was pope for a very short time(less than a month I think?), who's name was Pope John Paul. He apparently died of a heart attack. In due to respect karol Joseph Wojtyla picked the name Pope John paul the 2nd.

That Pope was called Albino Luciani. So why did HE pick "John Paul"? :D

haha, you stumped me with your giant knowledge filled brain Famine.

On another note he was also hit by a car and a truck at the same time when he was a kid.

The Dean of the College of Cardinals then asks "By what name shall you be called?" The new Pope then announces the name he has chosen for himself (starting in 535, the Pope has customarily chosen a new name for himself during his Pontificate; the names are not based on any system other than general honorifics, and have been based on immediate predecessors, mentors, and political similarity).

Why did John Paul I pick that name?

When Albino Luciano was elected Pope in August 1978, he took the name "John Paul I". That was an odd and unprecedented choice for two reasons: first, there had never been a Pope before who took two names; and second, there had never been a Pope before who, choosing a novel name, added "the First" to it. That is usually added by history once a second Pope honours the first by taking his name. He took the name "John Paul" because he wanted his Papacy to continue the good work done by both his immediate predecessors. Many saw Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI as quite different Popes. Certainly, they were different in many ways. Pope John Paul I perhaps did not want to show a preference for one or the other's style of leadership, so chose to emulate and honour them both.

Note: if a pope is officially named "NN the Great" no one can ever use that name again. For example, if JPII is named John Paul the Great officially, no one can ever be John Paul III, etc.

That'll do nicely.

So the umpteen Popes Pious and Innocent were really up themselves then.

Why do you catholics even have a Pope? Lutherans don't.

He is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Not every religion has to be the same as yours.

Lutherans are Lutherans because they got fed up with the pope and the practice of "indulgences" - do a google search and see what you come up with - it's a very interesting story.

btw - indulgences are the term given to buying forgiveness for your sins instead of repenting - it allowed the catholic church to get rich and it seemingly allowed people to buy their way into heaven
