I wanted to ask about the "Dashboard" or whatever Sony likes to call it, anyway I like the PSP-like dashboard, but once I get into the game I have no option of contacting friends, chatting with them, listening to my music while playing... so basically the Xbox like features.

I'm not an Xbox fan or anything, but I find those features to be nice. so my question is what does Sony have in mind ? and news on future upgrads or anything?

The Cross Media Bar (XMB).

Contacting friends within a game from the XMB is in a future update. Adding your own music to a game's soundtrack is in the firmware, but it's up to developers to add that to their games.

I think one of the updates coming soon is supposed to feature the ability to access the cross media bar (XMB) while in a game, presumably to allow things like you described, thats the nice thing about having the ability to modify the firmware via downloaded updates

EDIT: treedated

thanx for the info guys glad to hear it, any other feature that we should expect ?

Gah developers need to realize we want to listen to our own music when playing games.

Listening to 'our' music would completely destroy the ambiance of a game. A recent example would be GRAW2's orchestral score, totally epic. Why ruin that with a random Top 40 song?

that may be true for some games but there are times where I would so much rather be listening to something else it's something funny. Especially once I've beaten the game or grown tired of repetitive music. I suspect the main reason games aren't featuring it yet are dev laziness/unawareness and that it would probably be harder to get music licenses if the music will seldom be used

I would like to be able to listen to my own music but like SF said, why ruin some games orchestrated songs, the game that comes to mind for me would be shadow of the colossus which has one of the best soundtracks ever in a game.

At the same time I would also like to listen to my own music for online play, if I am playing SOCOM online or another online shooter I wouldn't mind playing to some Lamb of God.

well on the Xbox I usually have it on when playing car games , if I'm doing like 25 laps , you get bored of hearing the same noises

The point is I still want to listen to my music sometimes when playing a game, sure for some games it would completely destroy the ambiance of the game but what if you're playing the game for the 4th time in a row? I mean I know it won't work for some games but it would benefit other games as well. I myself would never turn off the music in the socom series offline that is. As said earlier during online I'd like to have some of my own stuff. Now say a game like Gran Turismo, surely someone other than me would love to just race while listening to their own music.

I agree 100%... but I also realize this is just a personal choice of mine and many people obviously do like and want to have the option to play their own music while playing games.

Now what I'm not entire understanding is that for those that like to play music while gaming... why not mute the PS3 and just play their music using what ever other devices (iPod, Zune, MPS) or play CD's, records, what ever on their stereo systems? I can't imagine the only music playback device someone has in their home is the PS3.

That said, I am all for giving people options, even options I have no use for myself, so I think this feature should be added... I just won't ever use it. :)

I would like people to stop calling it "Dashboard" :). Kidding. I really like the XMB better than the 360's blades. its the service thats better for Xbox. It is good its just very incomplete. Sony is still adding features to the psp so they'll keep doing for ps3 too.

In future updates we should be able access the internet also while play a game, some games already support the web browser in game.

Some games it's just not right, I agree, games that rely on the music to add drama and effect, they should keep what they're supposed to have. While I'm playing GT5 or whatever else, where the music is just there as added entertainment and not dramatic effect, I'd rather listen to what I like.

I think the XMB was the greatest thing Sony ever did! Im glad thats its implemented on alot of their electronics, its so simple and elegant..
