When you click it a very serious looking admonition comes up, listing the circumstances when using the feature is allowed. Should it be taken literally or can it be used to report posts for other reasons such as off-topic posts or threads in the wrong forum?

I'll let another mod comment on that, but I'd just like to butt in with this quick remark - Personally, I find it more helpful when members PM me while I'm online... I have "PM notification via pop-up box" set up, so when I receive a PM, I know instantly, and I can get to work on the problem much more quickly. And for some reason, I haven't been able to receive reports from the report button for quite some time now. But anyway, just noting that if I'm online, it's much better to PM me :) (I can't personally speak for the other mods' preferences though).

That's correct, I'll have to edit that message as it is a bit misleading. Please don't hesitate to use the service to report off-topic posts or threads in an incorrect forum. :)

I've always thought it humourous that after that very serious listing of reasons why a post should be reported, the button at the bottom of the page has an exclamatory, almost felicitous note - "Send Report Now!"

I always laugh at it when I report people for signature violations, though I haven't done that in months because mods complained to me that I was reporting people whose signatures were one over the line and it was wasting their time.

You sad, sad man.
