The Safari Rally was an event held from 1953 to the present day. The event was part of the WRC calender from 1978 to 2002. It was an event of endurnace which sorted the men from the boys. It strecthed out over 1000 km of open land. It had more in common with the Paris-Dakar than a modern rally. So, my question is simple, do you want this rally back, and why?

I have already stated my opinion above. It is a great rally which sorts the men from the boys. But I have an even better reason. This rally needs a good team one million times more than the others. Everybody has to be pulling their weight 24 hours a day, and if they don't, their whole rally could collapse. The mechanics have to work there hammers and screwdrivers down to a bare peice of metal to get the car ready, and the driver has to make sure he is in shape for the amazingly hot conditions. The co-driver has to do that, plus make sure he knows his pace notes, or he and the driver could get lost, serousily lost. The team manager has to make sure everyone is pulling their weight, and keep track of the progress on the road. And the people back at the base, well they have to make sure that the team sets of to the rally with all the right equitment, or the team could get into serious bother. Therefore, I would love to see it back!

Edit: I have added a poll if anyone would like to vote!

Double Edit: I have just found out that the Safari Rally is still being ran, but the WRC does not parpicitate any longer!

Triple Edit: I have just realised that the poll ends in 381 days, right at the end of next year. I was going to originally have it end in 31 days, (a whole month) but I decided 81 would be better. I erased the 1 of 31 but forgot to erase the 3 as well sorry. At least it means you have longer to vote!

Quadropple Edit: About 381 days longer!

Have to agree with you there. Todays WRC is lacking what made the 1990's WRC exciting. The multiple works teams, the rivalry between drivers and the Safari Rally.

But I have to correct you on the start date of the Safari Rally, it in fact started in 1953 under the name of the Coronation Safari with the first winner being a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Alan Dix

Sorry, I will correct that now!

Ah, the most exciting event on the calendar, and they erase it?

It was on this safari race that the Japanese cars were made famous, most notably the Datsun 240ZG, and rather recently the humble Toyota Celica. Tremendous amounts of history happened here, now endangered by safety concerns. Who wouldn't want it back? It's inevitable that someone will, thus this dilemma, but past rallies were much the same, as proven by the great road races, though not gravel.

I'm sure that the person who does not want the rally back has an interesting cause, though. I look forward to it.

It should be back for the simple reason I think WRC has one of its points, diversity. Different settings, surface and so on, that's part of the WRC brand whereas this rally fits in well.

Il never forget COlin Mcrae taking to the grass in the focus because it was smoother to drive off the stage than on it. Brilliant. Bring back the Safari!

Now that is what I call rallying.

Nice tribute.
