Interesting game in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last night.

After finishing 2-2, the game went to penalties. After all the outfield players had taken their penalties, the score was 7-7 and the two keepers had to take them. Wednesday's Nicky Weaver scored and Chesterfield's Tommy Lee missed for Wednesday to win 8-7.

Never seen a shoot-out decided by the keepers' kicks before

This division is insane.

Brighton are top and gone - 8pt clear. Charlton just ahead of the pack with 28pt. 3rd to 11th are covered by TWO POINTS. Oldham - in eleventh - can win a game and go 3rd. Bournemouth - in 3rd - could lose a game and drop to eleventh. In fact, only another five points takes you all the way down to the edge of the relegation zone - 18 of 24 teams covered by 7 points...

He's a bit of a conundrum. If he's happy, he's rather good. If he's unhappy, he's awful. And he gets unhappy quickly.

Put it this way, he's been fit all season and, leading the line, he's scored four for a (currently) top-four team. If he was that good, we wouldn't be keen to see someone else pay his wages for a month and leave a hole in our strike force.

I always questioned the wisdom of hiring a man fired from a struggling Championship club to manage a struggling Championship club and I'm surprised it has taken this long for the realisation that he just didn't have the ideas.

If I'd have had my choice of any manager in the world, I'd have gone for John Sheridan (currently Chesterfield - ex-Wednesday player), Roland Nilsson (currently Malmo [Swedish league champions] - ex-Wednesday player), Nigel Worthington (currently Northern Ireland and one of their most successful ever managers - ex-Wednesday player) or Nigel Pearson (currently Hull, but he's been successful everywhere he's managed - ex-Wednesday captain).

It appears Mandaric has got part of that message and hired an ex-Wednesday player. Sadly, it's Gary Megson, who has been dreadful at Norwich, Stoke, West Brom, Bolton, Leicester (under Mandaric again), Forest, Stockport and Blackpool. Even more sadly, I'm not surprised by this either.

12/2 - The first half was totally unacceptable. We spoke before the game about the fact we can`t give teams a two-goal start and put ourselves on the back foot. Their first goal was a poxy effort to give away. We have to stop abdicating responsibility because I can't keep going in at half-time, getting upset at the players and making changes.

16/2 - Tranmere took their first chance and it came due to suicidal defending by us. We have no alternative but to take the stick which has been coming our way.

19/2 - Woeful doesn't describe it adequately, the simplicity of the goals against us. It shouldn't happen like that.

6/3 - What was said stays in the dressing room. Individually and collectively, it wasn't acceptable.

16/3 - I shouldn't have to do that before anybody's done anything wrong to get a reaction from them. I said to the players I don't normally like telling people what goes off, but there was an almighty bust-up at half-time because it's just not acceptable.

19/3 - We are in a relegation scrap. That is a shocking statement to make about this football club, but it is a fact.

26/3 - It's pathetic, it's not on and I'll be reporting the referee. We should have won.

30/3 - It was poor. We didn't play with any enthusiasm, desire or drive and that's what you need in this division.

He's had two months and taken just eight points. Eight. Out of an available thirty-three. He's got the same "ideas" when he came into the club as he does now - shout a lot, tell the players they're rubbish and lose. Blame the players, blame the referee, blame penalties and red cards, blame everything apart from his inability to motivate the team and the fact that he's in charge of them.

"We're in a relegation scrap" he says. Yes, we are. We're four points above the relegation zone with a game in hand. We need to get eight more points as a bare minimum from the last eight games - having manage eight in eleven (Irvine's last eleven games netted him fourteen points). But we weren't in a relegation scrap when you took over, Megson.


We're in a worse position than when he came here. He has nothing to give us but excuses. Mandaric needs to give him his cards - and pay him for the remaining 34 months of his contract - and get in someone who has ideas, ability and talent.

Ironically, my American Football team...

Megson's had four attempts to win a game at Hillsborough - and each one has ended in defeat. The crowd haven't seen a league win at home this year, though all the non-Megson efforts this year have been draws at least and the previous three were good wins... (6-2, 3-0, 2-0). We've gone from having a positive goal difference, a free-scoring attack and, while perpetually pants (Wednesday's defence is always pants), a defence conceding in 1s and 2s under Irvine to the sixth worst defence in the league, an attack scoring just ten goals in twelve games and a goal difference of -6... The kicker is that the only teams in the division with a positive goal difference - like we had when Megson took over - are at least in the playoffs...
