Gran Turismo recently celebrated its fourth birthday, but the Showcase, released with Gran Turismo Sport, is almost 9 years old. Although there was no auto transfer from GTS to GT7, many players have moved their decals and liveries to GT7 and ever since millions have even uploaded more and more.

Some made liveries for fun. Some made liveries for their personal vehicle to use in Sport. Others wanted to recreate some amazing replica liveries we have witnessed in autosport in last decenniums. From very well known liveries like Falken, Advan or Red Bull, from series such as Formula 1, SuperGT, DTM and IMSA to way lesser known liveries and races from Super Taikyu, old magazine scans or some 60s races where only a handful of pictures stood the test of time. These liveries have also been build by hunder-thousands of decals, all great scalable vectors in .svg form.

This makes the Gran Turismo Showcase the biggest digital library of motorsport related vectors of all time (no, i don't have a source for this, but I'm happy to defend this actually). On top of that, it probably also has the biggest collection of 3d models of replicated racecars. And yes of course, there is also a lot of value in so many artistic fictional liveries (and decals) where people have spent ages on and are true masterpieces, but I wanted to focus more on historical data, aka replicas.

This digital library does not only have an emotional value to a lot of people I imaging, it probably also has a historical value, in an age where the internet more and more is looking to preserve history (stuff like The Wayback Machine etc). I was wondering how you are looking at this data, do you also have an emotional connection? But also really wondering what PD is going to do with all of this when GT8 comes. Will there be an option to transfer decals and liveries? Is it auto transferred? What happens with all the data which does not get transferred by the players/owners?

Although my liveries are often very simple and I rarely share them, I've dumped what must have been an embarrassing amount of time into the livery editor. It's just one of those things I never knew I needed until I had it, and once I had it, it became part of my daily life. From making tryhard replicas to memey stuff for races with friends, the livery editor scratches a very specific itch in my brain to create and personalise. It helps stimulate and drain my brain, allowing me to sleep easier, believe it or not.

I made this split livery to troll a friend in weekly racing

Even when not creating, the Showcase is often fun just to trawl through. I'm partial to itashas and meme liveries, but the stuff people can do within the games' limitations is just astounding. I've seen some people take a real life photo of a celebrity, split it into tens of layers, and assembling it on a car. It's just staggering, and it pains me to know that all of this, my own work included, has an expiration date at some point in the future.

I've also often wondered about how liveries will function in future GT games. On one hand, it'd be fantastic if all our liveries could transfer over as–is à la GT Sport to GT7. But on the other hand, hanging onto the past like that might prevent the livery editor from really evolving, forever locking us into its near 10 year old flaws like how picky it is with gradients, the extremely limited and often jagged results of projection options, etc..

For now, I try to take screenshots and photos of my work to preserve locally. I'm sure when the time comes, I'll probably be looking back at these photos and videos fondly.
