This morning, I was in for less than pleasant sight. My bike was stolen, and it wasn't just any bike, but my 1½ years old MTB, with disk brakes, front suspension etc.. and it was locked into a pole through the chassis with a motorbike lock. It didn't hold back the thieves though. :ouch: And what makes this even more infuriating is the fact that this was my SECOND MTB that got stolen in similar manner. :irked: I already filed a crime report to the police, but I think that my bike is already in the Russia. :ouch: :grumpy: And to make things sting even more, that bike was brought from USA, so it's unlikely that I will find another one like it from here.:guilty: :( Let's just say that I wasn't too pleasant company at work today. Co-workers probably learned few expletives in foreign languages too. And I just replaced the chain too, and was planning a maintenance before winter arrives..:indiff:

If I ever find out who is behind this stuff, they will meet my friend, Mr. Fiskars' sharp end. 🤬

I guess it's time that I get some sort of cheap-ish car. At least they can't toss it in their trunk unless thy have some sort of heavy duty pickup truck. :grumpy:

others can feel free to post their experiences of stolen stuff here if they wish, unless there's a thread for it already.

Most of my friends who have expensive bikes keep them inside. Pain in the behind I know but some people will go to any lengths to steal stuff. Lucky for me theft is pretty rare where I live here in Japan; I can't remember the last time I locked my MTB. I've probably jinxed myself now!

I have had 3 bikes stolen now, two were when they were outside. If you have a nice bike keep it in the house. If you cant keep it in the house take a wheel off and keep it indoors so it wont be worth the effort if the thief cant simply ride away.

I don't know if it's true, but I think I live in the bike theft capital of the world. Bikes get stolen on such a regular basis that it is barely worth riding anything of value, not because it is less bait, but because when it gets stolen it isn't as big of a deal. The lock you use doesn't matter, nor to what it is locked. Thieves get through anything without a problem. It is a major hassle. I love my bike and would be a very very mean person if someone stole mine. Lock it in a busy place, keep it inside overnight. I'm in a metropolitain area, so when I lock my bike I try to lock up close to a smoking area outside an office building. This way there's a pretty good chance you'll have someone with nothing to do but looking at the street infront of them. Cheap, makeshift security guards.

Put an ad up on Craigslist or similar site (Facebook?), offer a small reward. It isn't uncommon for crackheads to steal them and then try to sell the bike off to the next few people who pass by for a couple bucks. They'll ditch it a couple blocks away if they can't hawk it off to a passerby. Someone might find it and have a heart. Also leave your name, number and description with any local used bike shops, stolen bikes are easy money for them, so there's a good chanced they'll give you a call if someone walks in with it. However, be very careful when addressing the bike shop about it, you don't want to accuse them of running a stolen bike ring. Present it with a disclaimer, say that you just wanted to know if some degenerate walks in with a suspicious bike (also mention to them the police report, they're less likely to re-sell something that has already been flagged). When you file the police report be as specific as you can. Every minor detail you can think of should be on the record. I've heard stories of people unable to retrieve their property from the cops simply because their description was too vague and the authorities couldn't prove that the bikes weren't just the same model and make.

these weren't crackheads. there's a specific gang around here who specializes in snatching bikes that have more value, and then haul them off to Russia for sale. I wouldn't be surprised if the Romanians who recently moved in gave them a tip or something, there have been some guys loitering around the house.. gotta ask the neighbors if they saw or heard anything

With the time and effort put into your bike, and with what happened to the first one, had you considered insuring it?

ironically, I visited insurance company a day before the bike was stolen. :irked: we did discuss about insurance that would cover all what I own ( computer, bike, dishes.. everything), but I needed time to figure out how well it would fit into my current financial situation. :ouch:

I got my bike stolen (along with my brother's) out of our shed about a month ago. It was six kids, all 12 or 13 years old, who were planning on stripping it and selling it. The cops found my brother's the next day, but they didn't know mine was there (it wasn't registered with the police department). A phone call to the cops the next day got mine back, too. I suppose I was one of the lucky ones.

Getting your bike stolen sucks. When I was 10 I had my bike stolen out of my garage. It was very important to me even though it was just a plain, stock Mongoose because I got it for Christmas.Im not going to say i never stole anything(I mean small things not bikes or things like that),theifs suck.

Well it's not a bike and it wasn't mine. But a long time ago when we were living in an apartment(probably 1995ish), we were storing my Uncles 1987 Old's 442 in our garage. Well one morning we woke up and our garage door was open and there was no car inside it. Luckily they found it the next day. He still has yet to get it repaired for some reason.(note: it still has 1992 tabs on it)

Cars that are that old. Are usually ridiculously expensive to repair. My car took around 8 years to fix after my brother crashed it. It still isn't street legal yet.

I had my bike stolen once. this was a loooonnnnggg time ago i dont remember when but i had JUST rented Turtles in time for my SNES. it got stolen from the video store 2 minutes from my house. we looked everywhere for it, and finally the thieves dumped it behind A resturant down the road, and the tag helped the police contact me and get my bike back. so it sucks when it gets stolen i know. good luck finding yours! (or finding a new one)

  1. Get dummy bike
  2. Install GPS in downtube
  3. leave it outside unlocked
  4. find theifs location
  5. ????
  6. Profit!

If it were me, id slip a pinch of C4 in it also, or some simplex. Whatever floats your boat.

Hmm.. now that you mentioned it, I received training regarding plastic explosives in the army.. :trouble: And a friend of mine knows a fellow who has access to explosives. 💡 Hmm, gotta save some more money..

I too am a victim to theft. Last year my high school basketball team went to play Reading at their high school. We all kept our clothes, phones, and all other items in a "locked" locker room. It just happen to be a coincidence that this room was shared with the Reading team. We had to sit out in the gym and watch the girls' game and then we would head into the locker room and talk before the game. We all went back inside and some one jokingly said "Make sure all your stuff is still here, haha". So we did, my new Samsung Instinct, 10 dollars, and 3 of freinds phones and ipods were all stolen. I knew my stuff was messed with once I saw the locker my stuff was in. I couldn't figure out a way to get all my stuff into this tiny locker and close the door, so one of my shoes was hanging out of the door. They managed to fit all the clothes in the locker without a problem, so that was nice of them.
We filed a police report and called their school's principle and athletic director repeatedly. Now they don't even reture or answer our calls. That school lets their basketball player walk all over them, the teachers there get their things taken on a regular basis and don't do anything about it because they know they can't win.
And it's sad to hear about your bike, when you find out that something of yours that had a special value is stolen, it's heart braking.
EDIT: And my brother's new backpack and 80 gig ipod video were stolen out to the back of his girlfriends car at a Dave Mathews Band concert last night. We both had our 16th birthday presents stolen from us, his ipod and my phone.

This thread makes me feel like I'm doomed to lose my bike this year in uni. :grumpy:

Ha, exactly what happened to me =[. Figured I'd make an effort and make it in for the last lecture before the christmas holidays; literally just for one hour. It was just typical that in that time it got stolen :ouch:.

I've had my car stolen. Back when I still drove my old Pontiac as a DD some thieves took it out of the little lot right behind my apartment and drove it around for a couple days. They abandoned it after running over a parked motorcycle while driving down an alley.

I bunch of theivin' pikey ****** ** **** **** ****'s stole my beloved 1983 BMW 635CSi a few weeks ago. I would imagine it's already been stripped, sold and crushed by now... real shame as I'd sunk quite a bit of cash into restoring it - from the outside it looked a bit neglected, but alot of the parts underneath were new original BMW parts.. the real kicker is that as it was a 'project' car it was off the road, no MOT, no Tax ... and the real killer..... no insurance. :(

Oh, man, ALWAYS carry comprehensive insurance on a car even if you don't/can't drive it. My Pontiac is currently off the road awaiting restoration, and I insure it against fire, theft, flood, everything, for the princely sum of about $5 a year.
