Exactly... these guys are the spoiled bastards that will be the one with the faster car. :scared: ( on the straights anyway :dopey: )

Errh... since you hate the SR20 so much, wipe the 94' SE-R off your list... but if you're willing, that there's a car that'll do decent 15.6 1/4 mile times (but watch that third gear), costs next to nothing to buy, and has an engine that just begs to be fiddled with, turboe'd or swapped with a DET... it's reliable and relatively bulletproof (the engine, hey, not the electronics. :p ). And since it's an FF, you can use it in the rain, in the snow... etc... handling limits are decent for an old car and terrific with some good springs and rubber.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't mind the SR20 i just hate everyone throwing in my face that if i get a 240 to put it in... There are enough S13 wannabe's around here. The older SE-R is nice, maybe an older G20 if it wasnt fugly since its also an SR20. So you think if i get some good struts and tires it will be a good auto-x canidate?

Not the fastest, but not bad... know some guys use them for auto-x, because they're pretty light to begin with (that's how they get the 15.6 1/4ths stock with just 140hp), and can be stripped down even further. Struts and springs aren't hard to find, but one bugbear is that you can't camber the rear tires because of the beam axle (not certain if the SE-R model was beam also, but I'm pretty sure it is), but some shops have a mandrel that allows them to camber it out a bit by reshaping the axle.

It's a good, quick-ish slow (7.5 to 60... not that slow... ) car... I've seen videos of I/H/E SE-Rs taking on I/H/E Integras... old-school compact sports fun... and it's not a Honda. :) (that's worth a flame... )

1.) I'm not going to die...and if i do it wont be because of speeding or driving like an idiot. Like i stated before if im going to get on it, it will be on a close circuit or track, or an empty parking lot with cones and timers :dopey:

All good, and I commend you for it 👍

However, on the safety front, remember that not everyone drives considerately like that, and so you may well end up having an accident in your first 3 years that isn't your fault. Also remember that speed isn't the only cause of accidents - I can think of a couple of near misses I've had at less than 20mph, particularly in winter. That's in a 19 seconds to 60 and how-long-have-you-got quarter mile car.

Thank you and i definately agree with you. My dad almost trashed his '05 LS thanks to some d***he on the highway that cut us off. Thats the thing im worried about...the ****ty drivers out there mangling my future baby :indiff:

If you want have car that won't kill you after a big hug with the tree or a kiss on the guard-rail, it better be weaker than 100 hp.

Saying a car that does 0-60 in 6.5 secs and saying its not that quick as a new driver sounds pretty dumb to me. In reference to the 850 2.5 20v being slow, it certainly doesn't feel it going around country roads... but then I guess most roads in america are straight, wide and boring.

The Volvo is the best buy, it's the safest and could have you thanking it later on in life. The chances are if you have car that will feel like your doing 60 when your doing 80, you'll be driving at 80 more than you think and the chaces are you'll have a crash in the next couple of years regardess, I crashed after 4 months, my fault as well, since then I've had a car written off, but that was a female van driver (I know) hitting my car while it was parked.

If your saying a Volvo won't 'disguise' the speed, your very wrong  (Even if the speedo is over enthusiastic) Volvos very easily disguise speed as they are generally happiest cruising. I've been in a Volvo 740 doing nearly 110mph and it felt like 60! although it was a wide straight road.

I'd imagine the lower to the ground and the noiser a car is would be the best car to really 'feel' the speed. The noise is certainly right, its difficult not to know your going fast in my car :sly: (time to turn up the stereo!)

And yep even if you are a good driver, theres just as much chance someone will hit you.

If you're going to make the absurd sweeping generalization that "roads in america are straight, wide and boring," at least get your own facts straight. The Volvo 850 was never sold in this country with a 2.5-liter 20-valve engine. I reference again:

93-97 Volvo 850 GLT/854R
good safe bet 👍 my dad used to have one

87-93 Celica All Trac or GT Four
kinda rare (in socal anyways)

89-92 MKIII Supra/Turbo
gas mileage 👎 but cool nonetheless

89-92 RX-7 Turbo/Non-T
gas mileage, oil consumption and need for rotary mechanic 👎

Mid 90's Audi Sport Quattro's
audi/foreign repairs may be costly 👎

91-95 Jetta/Passat VR6
&
82-94 MKI-MKIII Golf GTi
eh, not my cup of tea

91-94 Sentra SE-R
i had one. fun car, kinda rare too... 👍

89-91 240SX SE
i have one, stock engine is fine for skipping around town. 👍

90-95 Ford Taurus SHO
i always wanted one

92-96 Prelude /4WS
eh

last comments: i consider myself to be a pretty safe driver. but you cant control everyhting, and odds are you will hit or get hit before 21. i remember the mentality too. you just want a cool "zippy" car to have fun with. just keep in mind cost of ownership.

If you actually read what I said, I said 'most'. As in a larger proportion of roads in the US are wider and straighter than in Europe atleast and in my opinion that makes the majority of them pretty boring. I never said EVERY SINGLE ROAD IN AMERICA IS STRAIGHT!>!>!1`` else everyone would end up in the sea... ;)

Finally, you must eliminate the 1997 Volvo 850 GLT, leaving only the 1993 and 1995-1997 Volvo 850 GLT. Those vehicles carry a 168-horsepower 2.4-liter five-cylinder and, well, aren't particularly quick. I don't recommend them.

And thats why I mentioned the 2.5 20v GLT. Do you really think I'd bother to look up to see whether a car can be obtained in another country? Well you might, but I'm unlikely to.

Christ some people are jumpy.
