:nervous:

I'm really getting nervous here. I think my Hard Drive might be going bad. First, I have the Haunted Folder, second, I got an error message when transferring music over to my MP3 player saying something along the lines of "the filesystem is corrupt", but did not specify which filesystem was corrupt (my iRiver still works fine) and to topn things off, I just got this error when attempting to extract an RAR file:
error10ag.jpg

followed by this:
error20tg.jpg

Is this an error in the rar file or the Hard Drive? Bad block definately sounds hard drive related... Should I start frantically backing up my Hard Drive?

:scared:

If you think it might be your HardDrive going bad, then definately start backing up, for safety's sake.

definately

For some reason it really annoys me when people spell "definitely" wrong.

I think you may just need a format, mate. Actually, I have no idea what "bad block" means but when my computer starts spitting out weird errors at me I back up every app I want on a CD, print out all the Word docs I need, and wipe the HD clean.

It could be an error on the drive or in the RAR file.

However, you'll never settle until you've got a decent backup, so I would do that. Go buy 100 CDs and just burn out all your data, Then do a low-level format (which will find and mark all the bad locks as unusable), and re-install.

Are you trying to wear out his CD burner, Giles? :p

There's this thing when you first start using the installation disc, Event Horizon; a repairer. It's simple enough to go through the repair process - just skip past the license agreement, press R, and do a couple of other things that skip my mind. I think so anyway, it's been ages since I did a Windows installation.

That won't do anything for the bad block though. Everytime something tries to be written to that block the same thing will happen.

edit:
I'm an idiot. I misread Stinky's post thinking he said 'restore' instead of 'repair.'

My CD Burner is already worn out. It was defective, so when I get a chance, I need to RMA it to newegg. No worries about bakin up, though, I am going to set up an old, old 300MHz machine with a 60GB hard drive in order to back everything up. I was planning on doing a format anyway this christmas break. But, are the bad blocks permenant? I was thinking about buying another 80gig to run my 2 HDDs at RAID0, but if this hard drive is bad, I might as well spring for the extra money to get a 200 or 160.

I'm certainly not an authority on this, but it's worth a try - have you ever considered ghosting from the HD that's defective to a new one?

From where I'm sitting it seems to be the hard drive that's defective and not anything to to with your files.

That said, when I get those problems, a format knocks them on the head so maybe it is your files.
