MOLSHEIM, France — Bugatti plans to publicly unveil its long-rumored Veyron Targa in mid-August at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, company sources confirmed to Inside Line, with production scheduled to begin in 2009.

IL reported early details on the Veyron Targa two years ago.

The Targa will get a removable hardtop, as well as an expandable fabric cover that clips into place. The chassis will be reinforced, and top speed will be limited to 217 mph.

Beginning next year, the Targa will be assembled in very small numbers alongside the existing Veyron coupe.

There is no official word yet on price or volume. But with the Veyron coupe now selling for upwards of $2 million, the Targa is expected to fetch a premium of at least $250,000 above that. Production is expected to be limited to no more than 75 or 80 units.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is the world’s fastest and most exciting roadster, and will be displayed to the public for the first time on the afternoon of August 16, 2008, outside The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

The highest bidder will have the opportunity to specify their new car at the factory in Molsheim/Alsace by bidding on the first customer car at Gooding & Company's Pebble Beach Auction on August 17th.

I see they have done some other tweaking whislt theyve been at it.... new headlights with Audi style LED strips and what seems like a new rear end..

Looks very nice, kind of yaht-ish, especially in those colours...

Just had a thought: What kind of negative effect does the removable top have on the performance (ala Lambo LP640 convertible)?

I'm not sure why you brought up the LP640 Roadster considering it weighs & performs as well as the coupe, which meant the top really didn't affect the car. But, as far as I've heard, the targa top just causes the Veyron to be limited to 220Mph.
 
When the top is down, drag increases a lot... and perhaps a fabric top would not be able to withstand such speeds. For a hardtop, definitely weight and possibly the less cleaner airflow running over and past it as the roofline is somewhat truncated over coupes. (see Chevrolet Corvette C5)

What's the point of a Veyron if it can't do 250? But seriously, a very stylish targa; very imposing yet crisp and good-looking, once again especially in that colour. I like it.

Sorry, I was referring to the convertible portion of the car on the LP640 limiting the top speed... Should have been more specific. But, nevertheless, you answered my question.

The thought of doing 220 MPH with the top down is a good one indeed.

Um, the point could be of having a nice, very luxurious, and still stupidly fast car? 220Mph isn't exactly a slow top speed either.

So there is a hardtop (fixed roof), a targa (removable plastic roof) and a convertible (removable cloth roof)? I always thought there only is the coupe with removable roof pieces and the convertible with a cloth roof.

Wikipedia has a pretty good explanation. But you can take a look at a C5 Z06 for the fixed roof.


edit: On the Veyron: I like the look of it and if given the chance would probably take it over the regular one. Is it going to be the fastest "open-top" production car?

I don't remember how fast the Zonda F roadster is, but it will be close.

Only on the Z06 and the ZR1. All of the "standard" Corvette coupes are actually targa tops, and in addition to that, they sell a convertible. As I recall, you can order a three-piece package with the "standard" Corvette to change out the roof pieces. One is solid so it looks like a hard top, one is tinted, and I believe the other is clear.

So the Z06 is a Fixed Roof Coupe, while all the standard models have a removable hardtop. You learn something new every day...
 
As if the Veyron wasn't heavy enough from the get-go, now they've taken off the top and are going to add more reinforcement to make sure it doesn't flex like a wet noodle... Should be close to the weigh of a crew cab turbodiesel dually pickup once they're done with it.
 
It's definitely cool and stylish, but I think that I would take the regular car over this one.
