The virus which almost got the better of me

I was just reading icemanshooter23's thread and his alt+ctrl+delete problem and reminded me of a problem i had with my PC

I had something like that, it closed task manager whenever i tried to open it BUT also closed IE whenever i searched key words like virus, kill, remove, spyware, protection etc... I tried to remove the the virus using Norton but it closed that too and also the same for my other virus/spyware remover software. I couldnt restore the system using system restore either because it closed that aswell :indiff: .
So i tried re-installing Windows but it was refusing to remove the old system and afterwards the computer ran REALLY slow.

In the end i gave up and just formatted the hard drive which worked!!!!! :)
Obviously after that traumatic experience i was more weary with what i downloaded.
I havent botherd to install Norton and instead use something called AVG which is brilliant and has free updates. I also have invested in firewall protection which is brilliant when everything is properly configured, if not it can be a pain in the ass.

Before people always said be careful with what you accept, dont go to untrusted sites....and all that BUT they are absolutely right. An example is on instant messenger, My Brother was about to accept a file download his friend sent. I spoke to his friend and it turned out he didnt try to send us anything, it was his computer which did it itself because his computer was infected!

Now i really appreciate my computer and realise how much i use and depend on it when it was ill with a virus and everyone should be careful with what they download becase you can REALLY fu** up your PC.

ohh its happening to me right now, programs will randomly close, randomly freezes, refuses to start, refuses to shut down, has a problem with everything, freezes to not let me install anything.... before, i used to reinstall windows whenever it had its annual madness and it would be fine but iv tried reinstalling several times and every time something immediately goes wrong. refusing to accept it has a mouse attached to it, deleting the sound drivers and once back on the system and shown exactly where the damn files are it refuses to use them :banghead: recently got an imac g5 now tho and thats been perfect and a nice break from this pos

Easiest way to get rid of a virus like this (once you're infected anyway), is to boot the machine into safe mode. When you turn on your PC, after the first black screen that comes up (telling you details about your CPU and RAM) press and hold the F8 button on your keyboard. You should then be taken to a menu which asks you what you'd like to do (Start in safe mode, start windows normally, etc). Choose start in safe mode.

Your computer will then boot into safe mode, which basically means that only important system programs will be started, the virus should NOT run. Then when you're in safe mode, you'll be able to use things like CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up task manager. Click on the processes tab in task manager and take a look at the running processes. Google any processes you're not sure about. If you find any processes that are virii/trojans/spyware/adware, right click on them and end them. Now if you have an anti-virus installed, you should be able to run it. If you can run it, it should take care of your virus for you. If you don't have an anti virus (you really should get one, even if it's just a free one. AVG might be crap, but it's better than nothing :) ) then you should click on Start>Run and type msconfig. Then click on the Startup tab.

The list shown here is basically what programs will start when you boot your PC and should include things like messenger programs you might use and other programs which reside in your system tray (the space at the bottom right of your screen beside the clock). Google everything on the list and see what kind of search results you get. If you get search results saying it's a virus/trojan or it's spyware/adware, uncheck the box in msconfig and it shouldn't boot the next time you run your PC.

Once you've gone through all the items and checked them out, close msconfig and reboot your machine. See if everything is back to normal and if you can start Task Manager with ctrl+alt+del.

Another thing you could do is to run a program called Hijackthis and post on their forum

Always remember never open any emails if you don't know who there from.

...and using a different e-mail client (like Mozilla Thunderbird of Foxmail) would probably be a good idea too. Outlook Express has many known security flaws.

Also, visit Windows Update to keep your windows PC up to date.

You should also have your virus scanner scan the emails as they come into your email client.

I have AGV which does it automaticly to every email. Is that the same for all email scanners?
