It's blue, it's incredibly loud, and it can fly over 600 mph...straight up. Yes, it's the F/A-18 Hornet!

The United States Navy Blue Angels are back in town for Seafair weekend, and they started their first practice session promptly at 10 AM this morning, waking yours truly from a wonderful slumber. No hard feelings though; it's always cool to watch these things fly around the city at this time of year :)

I managed to snap a few pictures from my apartment as they flew over the north end of Lake Washington, and made a few passes through the University District, sometimes directly overhead :scared:


 
Coincidently, there was some millitary thing happening in Portsmouth today, so a few jets flew past our house really low. Apparently, Mum said they were so low she could have taken a picture of them with her short-zoom camera. It was very, very loud, too - and that was from inside the house.
 
Whenever there's an airshow at the local Navy Base (NASJAX, if any of you are familiar), the Blue Angels fly directly over my house. One time, they flew only a few hundred feet above it. They couldn't have been more than 500ft off the ground.

The Blue Angels are quit popular in SF. They put on soooo many shows. I've seen them about 50 times.. No joke.

I try to see them every year at least once, at their homecoming show at Pensacola NAS, only a couple of hours from here. They also put on a demonstration at Pensacola Beach the second Saturday of July, but it's always SO &%^^$$!! HOT, and they don't let you in the water during the show. Visibility is the best you can get, though, with the slope of the beach, and if you're in one of the high-rise condos, they make a few passes lower than your room!

Their November homecoming show is always a really big show, something going on all day. I saw my first airborne B-2 there, my first Harrier, my first F-117, my first A-10, and a couple years ago, my last F-14.

Which one? Their five-man formation doesn't match that one.

I highly doubt that.
At that distance, you probably wouldn't have any windows or roof shingles left on your house ;)

Yeah. And you'd be deaf and your eyeballs would explode.

All the planes from the Air and Sea show out here regroup right over my dad's house before heading back out to the beach.

Also, in Arkansas, the biggest C-130 base in the world is a couple miles from my relatives' house. Sometimes, while driving the rural highways, you could see them doing airdrops and stuff. They also occasionally fly right over my relatives' property. They're some monsterous planes up-close. They couldn't be higher than 500-700 feet off the ground.
 
If you want scary, I get hot air balloons which fly way lower than that, the people wave :(
 
Do you wave back and wink, or do you just flail around like an injured parrot because you got shampoo in your eye? ;)

Well, to wrap up this story, the Blue Angels had their big show today. It was really cool to be watching it on TV, and then turning around and seeing them through my window. I didn't take any pictures, but I probably should have. Some of it was very spectacular. As the show ended, and the planes were looping around to head back to Boeing Field, the 6-man formation came right by my building, with the sun glinting off the undersides of the planes. Good stuff :)👍
 
I was stationed at Virginia Beach from '84 to '86 (in 1984 the Blue Angels were still flying A4's) and saw one of those guys fly between the two white towers on Oceana Blvd. There must not have been 10 feet of clearance around the plane. UN BUH LEE VAH BULL!!! HOO RAH!!!
 
I think if there was a funeral where they got the BLUE ANGELS to do a flyover, we'd all (in the US) have seen it on the news or heard about it.

But that's a pretty cool wakeup! Unless you've been in combat, then that probably wouldn't have been to nice :scared:
