With all or most racing series either complete or are completing, it's time to look back on this year and all of its moments- good, bad, and indifferent. There are all kinds of motorsports series as well as all sorts of teams and drivers that helped define 2013 in racing. I always invite my own GTPlaneteers to reflect on this year and all the different nuances that helped define this year.

What is this post about? Simple:

* What were some of the best moments of 2013?
This can involve great races, amazing wins, history-making wins, epic finishes, fun moments, and more.

* What were some of the worst moments of 2013?
These can involve things like (but not limited to): boring races, controversy, (it's rare I use this word) douchebag moments... and also, driver injuries and deaths.

* What were some of the weird, unusual, indifferent moments of 2013?
I mean what I say here. Indifferent can also relate to things like drivers retiring from a series or racing in general, series that are now defunct or nearing defunct status, and more.

* Anything to look forward to next year?
Based on 2013's racing, is there something you're looking forward to for next year?

I usually offer my own thoughts to start things off, but I'll basically get some insight from all of you before I share my thoughts on 2013. Remember- not all racing series are done for 2013. So this is basically a real-time look at 2013 in racing. Let's look back on 2013!

  • Nothing really springs to mind
Anything for next year?

👍:
- Rob Austin's win in the BTCC

- Grosjean coming good
- Timo Glock's win in the last round of the DTM
- Sebastien Loeb at Pikes Peak

👎:
- Losing Allan Simonsen at Le Mans
- Popping Pirellis at Silverstone
- People booing Vettel
- McLaren's downturn in form
- WRC's promotion issues
- Dario Franchitti's enforced retirement
- DTM leaving the UK (not suprised, though)
- Driving standards in the BTCC & WTCC
- Sebastien Loeb's crash in the French WRC round

:indiff:
- Jimmie Johnson's 6th NASCAR title

💡
- Webber and Porsche at Le Mans
- Honda's new BTCC car
- New F1 regulations
- Sebastien Loeb in the WTCC
- Juan Pablo Montoya back in Indycar

With enough time I could go on, but I'll have to leave it there for now.

Good..
BTCC back to its best near enough, huge grids, great racing.
Sebastian Vettel hit a new level of domination this year. Stunning.
Sebastian Loeb smashing Pikes Peak. I still maintain he is the greatest active driver on the planet right now (Sorry Vettel)

Bad..

Allan Simonsens fatality at Le Mans. Made me feel sick. Also losing Sean Edwards.
The F1 season. Sorry, but it's a joke this year. Pirelli made a tyre that had decent racing but then became unsafe. Now we are on a rock hard tyre with processional racing.
NASCAR's Gen6 on a whole. On a few tracks like Auto Club it was amazing. Elsewhere it just... didn't work. Also Nationwide series needs a boost up. Badly. NASCAR's stewarding is also becoming worse than Indycar in recent years, and thats saying something.

Different..
Macau WTCC and Menards tyre are certainly recent ones.

2014..
Will the V6 F1 era work? New more powerful WTCC, and Sebastian Loeb joins Yvan Muller. Speaking of teamings - Alonso and Kimi at Ferrari can't end well.
WRC with Hyundai and hopefully more from Robert Kubica.
BTCC continuing to grow.
Super GT / DTM merger - this could grow.
The USCR. Will it work, will it not?
Le Mans of course. Porsche vs Audi vs Toyota. And all new regs and a flurry of engines and new cars.

2013 was never the greatest year for racing. But 2014 will be. No doubt.

Good:
-The Gen 6 NASCAR car looks rather good.
-Loeb's Pikes Peak run

Bad:
-The gen 6 car doesn't perform as good as it looks.
-Dominance in most major series' by their respective champions
-McLaren under-performing in F1
-Franchitti being forced to retire
-Simonsen's death at Le Mans

Looking forward to:
-New regulations for F1, even though I don't see the pecking order changing too much.
-Le Mans, Toyota may take the fight to Audi and Porsche making it's debut.
-Inaugural season of the USCC, glad to see proper prototypes back at Daytona.

The Best
  • Tony Kanaan wins first Indianapolis 500
  • Takuma Sato wins first Indycar race
  • Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano NASCAR rivalry
  • Jimmie Johnsons 6th NASCAR championship - I hope he gets 8 (beating the record of 7) and establishes himself as the best NASCAR driver ever.
  • Overall quality of the Indycar races, on both ovals and roadcourses
  • Firestone Indy Lights finish at Indianapolis

The Bad
  • Sebastian Vettel's domination of Formula 1 - it wouldnt be so bad if he at least had a rival that pushed him every now and then
  • Caution filled Le Mans 24 hours and Allan Simonsen's death
  • Ben Spies retires from racing at the age of 28 due to injuries - so much talent but it just never came together. What a shame.
  • Danica Patrick's poor NASCAR results
  • Marc Marquez wins motoGP title - I dont like rookies winning championships...especially at the highest levels. Doesnt look good for the series

Looking Forward to in 2014
  • Indycar aerokits debuting at the Indianapolis 500, along with the reduction of downforce should make for even better racing
  • Formula 1 turbo return
  • Juan Montoya's return to openwheel racing in Indycar
  • The USCR season - it should be amazing - starting with the Daytona 24 hours then the Sebring 12 hours, what a 1-2 punch
  • Porsche vs Toyota vs Audi at Le Mans
  • Kyle Larson in NASCAR Sprint Cup - could be the next big Superstar

Okay. Now it's time I offer some of my own thoughts based on impressions and my own experiences. Internet lingo I learned not too long ago is "TL;DR" (too long; didn't read). Well, prepare for another TLDR post...

--- Best Moments ---
* The Mudsummer Classic - if you call or consider yourself any motorsports enthusiast, even you have to love the Eldora experience. How everything was executed was just a thing of beauty. I think prior to that race, NASCAR's top series hasn't raced on a dirt track since 1970. It almost makes you wonder if maybe Nationwide and Cup would maybe try some dirt track action. I loved this. Even on Twitter, I said something along the lines of "if NASCAR was looking to save itself with some stunt, they just saved themselves with the Mudsummer Classic."

* Frank Kimmel's 10th Title - Frank Kimmel is one of my personal favorite drivers. This guy is king of ARCA much like Steve Kinser is king of the World of Outlaws. Congratulations to Frank Kimmel on his tenth title. If he isn't in somebody's Hall of Fame, he should be.

* Darrell Wallace Jr. Breaks Through - I was so proud watching Darrell Wallace Jr. get his first win when he won at Martinsville. "Bubba" Wallace is going to be a star of the future in my view. He may one day be as successful in his series as another Black racer in another series- James Stewart.

* The Death of P1-Level Sportscar Racing - After some thought, I think this is addition by subtraction as far as sportscar racing is concerned. Audi's domination of top-level sportscar racing and the USCR going with Daytona Prototypes and P2 machines as the highest class of racing there, I am not really going to miss those high-level prototypes. Or maybe this is in reference to the USCR not having these high-end prototypes as the highest class of the USCR.

* Ryan Villopoto - This guy is awesome. I am normally a fan of James "Bubba" Stewart in AMA Supercross, but Villopoto is just a winning machine.

* Tony Kannan's Indy Triumph - Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Tony Kannan finally won himself an Indy 500 after 11 previous tries. A win at Indy is a win at Indy- even with the race ending under caution as Dario Franchitti crashed out a few laps from the finish.

--- Worst Moments ---
Now for the sad moments that I can remember or comment on:

* Remembering Those We Lost - Jason Leffler, Maria de Villota, Allan Simonsen, Dick Trickle, and others who don't immediately come to mind for me.

* Remembering What We Lost - SPEED Channel - Even if SPEED wasn't absolutely perfect or absolutely approved in covering motorsports and celebrating automotive culture, it was the best we had before SPEED was sacrificed to FOX Sports 1. If you want a little salute from one of our own GTPlaneteers, let me share with you this video from mi amigo bueno and fellow Texan, RACECAR:

Rest in peace, Speedvision and SPEED Channel. Even worse than this sacrifice is SPEED Channel going from the TV home of automobile culture and being "The Motorsports Authority"... to a lowly blog on FOX Sports. SPEED's condemnation is just as sad as it no longer being on the air.

* NASCAR Trucks' Mosport Finish - The finish to the Trucks race at Mosport was great... until that final lap crash at about the last corner. This video offers a look at the finish:

* The Final Seasons of Grand-Am and the ALMS - Both series have provided incredible racing for each respective series. I especially loved the ALMS as a fan of traditional sportscar racing. I do still loved watching Grand-Am with some of the intense finishes.

* The ALMS Race at Baltimore - There was a massive crash that took a while to clear up on the streets of Baltimore. It was a terrible moment. One or two drivers interviewed voiced something along the line of, (indirect quote) "a big crash happened, and we lost a lot of time racing. It's bad for the fans and the drivers."

* Tony Stewart Out - I used to hate Tony Stewart a lot. But in recent years, I've grown respectful of him. You have to respect that he speaks his mind and doesn't care much about any reprecussions. Sadly during this year, he got injured and ended up being done for the year.

* Michael Waltrip Racing's Faux Pas - ...or to use a word I learned earlier today- MWR's asinine actions. I am talking about the intentional spinout by Clint Bowyer just to screw over the pace of the race. This incident was almost like NASCAR's version of the Tim Donaghy scandal in terms of fixing or screwing sporting events. This basically resulted in Jeff Gordon being added as a 13th contender while Ryan Newman was knocked out of the Chase. This basically gave my man Jeff Gordon a new lease on life. Too bad things didn't go very well for him to get his fifth Cup Championship.

* Dario Franchitti's Injury and Subsequent Retirement from Racing - Dario Franchitti suffered a brutal crash here in Houston earlier this year. The impact and the surgeries later resulted in doctors saying Dario should race no longer. I did make it sound like a eulogy about Dario, and I apologize; but it is sad seeing Dario's racing career end this way.

More of the MWR controversy detailed here: http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/sto...ruex-jr-ryan-newman-jeff-gordon-090913#!olsie

* American TV Coverage of Motorsports - I am mostly talking about the end of Speed Channel and the lack of racing coverage outside of NBC Sports Network. My parents' Dish package doesn't include NBC Sports Network. I would GLADLY trade Universal Sports Network with NBC Sports Network so I can see more racing action like the IndyCar Series, World Challenge, and F1. Never have I been more out of touch with racing news on TV than in recent times. SPEED's sacrifice to FOX Sports 1 left a huge hole in me in following motorsports. I still feel mostly displaced TV-wise since SPEED became FOX Sports 1.

--- Neutral/Indifferent ---
Here are a few details of 2013 I've been a bit indifferent about.

* Danica Needs More Experience - I love Danica Patrick. Always have- ever since first hearing of her in Toyota Atlantics. I just think she needs more grooming in the NASCAR ranks. Maybe one more season in Nationwide. As much as I like Danica and with all due respect, the pool of talent in Cup is much too deep for Danica. Regardless, I think she'll get better. Trouble is... can she at least be a contender and a consistent contender?

--- Looking Ahead... ---
Here are things I wonder in the future...

* Continued Growth of Global Rallycross Championship - I have to admit... once I started finally seeing some of the Global Rallycross Championship, I started to follow it a bit more. It can be much better and with some greater competition. I do wonder how much further this deal can go.

* Winning the Big One? - Kurt Busch can win all these races... but somehow isn't good enough to be champion.

* USCR... For Better or Worse? - GT/Sportscar/Endurance racing has been a style of racing I've always enjoyed more than any other. Getting to see it on TV was sad for me in the past because I needed (then) Speedvision to see the great events. The ALMS changed that when I saw highlights on NBC, CNBC, and even CBS. All I can hope for is that United SportsCar Racing continues what the ALMS and Grand-Am started. On top of that, can there be further evolution of sportscar racing in North America?

* Formula E Championship - As a motorsports enthusiast, I actually am quite interested in this championship... while most others wish something like this die a quick and painless death. A number of teams like ABT Sportsline and Super Aguri will make up some of the different teams to take on this championship.

* The IndyCar Series Road Course Race at Indy - Some like the idea; some loathe the idea. I usually call May as "May Madness" because of all the fanfare and action leading up to the Indy 500. May is going to have the road course race around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in addition to the Indy 500 itself. I am a bit indifferent on two races at Indy for the IndyCar Series, but to each his/her own.

And those are some of my thoughts on 2013 based on action I can recall. I may add more thoughts or replies in future posts.

The Bad:

Yes, this year sucked.

The Bad:

- Fatalities again.
- Vettel.
- Vettel.
- Vettel.
- Vettel.
- In general F1 took a major step back from the awesomeness of 2012.
- Jimmie Johnson.
- Clint Bowyer.
- Franchitti's injury.
- Castroneves lost title.
That bad list is my list exactly.

Some of us (even myself) have mentioned SPEED Channel. As sad as it has been for drivers to be either injured or killed, I think SPEED becoming FOX Sports 1 was the biggest disappointment for me as a racing fan. SPEED Channel was my strongest link to the racing world. Even with its flaws, even with more NASCAR and less than most other series, there was no better TV source that celebrates both motorsports and automobile culture. What little racing is left on now FOX Sports 1 will ultimately get phased out as FOX Sports tries to contend with ESPN. My problem is NOT with FOX Sports 1; it's... did you have to sacrifice SPEED Channel just to make FS1 happen? If anything, it shown you more and more that (1) TV as we know it is dying, and (2) it further establishes what kind of voice us motorsports fans have compared to most traditional sports fans. Even if the formula wasn't a financial success, at least SPEED Channel and Speedvision worked long enough for us racing and car fans to care. It's just too bad the UFC makes more sense to more people than any race.

On a much lighter note, the coolest event I've seen this year was the Mudsummer Classic. This was NASCAR Trucks racing around Eldora. I really think NASCAR Trucks has been the most interesting of the three top NASCAR touring series for 2013. They raced on a famous dirt track as well as a competitive road course in Canada that I think NASCAR should visit more often. Surely it was fun watching the NASCAR Trucks go around Eldora. How the race was determined and set up was just amazing. I'll say it again- if you are any motorsports enthusiast, even you had to be impressed with how NASCAR handled this event.

One other thing I wanted to make note of for 2013 moments... was Marc Marquez ballin' or what? I just have to wonder if he can keep his stellar form in future seasons. He was just awesome this season. If he can keep up his great riding, we may be looking at him as one of the greatest MotoGP racers of all time.

There are still a lot of races I wished I could have seen this year or seen more of. A lot of my memories of 2013 are still mostly limited.

* What were some of the best moments of 2013?
-Rob Austin's first win in the BTCC
-Andrew Jordan winning the BTCC title
-Jose Maria Lopez' one-off appearance in the WTCC
-Colin Turkington's season in BTCC
-Indy Lights race at Indianapolis
-James Nash winning the WTCC Indy title
-The general action in Indycar
-Carlos Munoz' two races in Indycar
-Robert Kubica winning the WRC2 title

* What were some of the worst moments of 2013?
-Deaths
-F1 in general, from the quality of races, the technical side and the championship fight.
-Continued dire state of WTCC and WRC.
-The standard of racing in GP2

* What were some of the weird, unusual, indifferent moments of 2013?
-The tyre dramas in F1 - so many things have become farcical that tyres exploding just seems like it sums up where F1 is at these days.

* Anything to look forward to next year?
-Sebastien Loeb in the WTCC
-Yet more new cars, teams and drivers in the BTCC
-Large regulation change in F1 which always shakes things up, despite my serious disillusionment with the sport
-Porsche returning to Le Mans in the top class/3 way manufacturer fight
-Formula E, looks interesting, not a fan of silent cars but I will have a look

Good:
John Force wins his 16th NHRA Top Fuel Funny Car Championship. Oddly enough, he did this while facing off against his daughter Courtney Force at the Toyota Nationals held in Las Vegas.

Bad:
Fatalities.
One never likes hearing of these, regardless of the motor sport in which it is affiliated to.

The Bad
  • Marc Marquez wins motoGP title - I dont like rookies winning championships...especially at the highest levels. Doesnt look good for the series
I can't even comprehend how you got to that. Marquez has done something which is almost unthinkable, yes he was allowed on a factory bike in his debut year and Lorenzo and Pedrosa had injuries but he still had to go out and win it! I consider Lorenzo to be maybe the very best rider I've ever seen and a 20 year old rookie beating him cannot be a bad thing.

Ummm, man my memory sucks!

The Good
BMW retaining manufacturers title in the DTM :D

The Bad
Audi claiming the teams and drivers titles in the DTM :irked:

The Weird
ummm... :dunce:

- It rained when I went to the Goodwood Revival
- It also rained when I was at Le Mans
- F1 in general

* What were some of the weird, unusual, indifferent moments of 2013?
- The Audi bringing it's wheel back to the pits after it fell off

* Anything to look forward to next year?
- Hopefully some exciting F1 action
- Le Mans... Because Le Mans

The good:
-Marquez winning MotoGP
-Kannan winning the Indy 500
-Black Falcon > everything in GT endurance racing

The bad:
-Edwards, Leffler, and Simonsen all dying on-track (along with de Villota's related death)
-Several other drivers being injured (e.g. Franchitti, Hamlin, Lorenzo, and Stewart)
-The Nurburgring 15 Hours
-F1's tire isues
-Le Mans sending out the safety cars whenever someone sneezed

The WTF:
-Macau's marshals... WTF?
-Indycar's standing starts; good idea, but we had how many aborted starts?

What to look forward to:
-The new USCC
-LMP1 regulations being freed up
-New F1 technical regulations
-Can Johnson win 7?
-Can Vettel win 5 in a row?
-The return of Porsche

👍

Grosjean growing up & showing his talent.
Webber going to Porsche - I think he's gonna be great, eventually.
Kimis move to Ferrari.

👎

Maria De Villota dying after surviving last years accident.
The Sebastian Vettel/Red Bull F1 show. (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...)
Ecclestones shenannigans.

- Personally, attending the British MotoGP event with Paddock Passes was a highlight.
- Seeing Vettel claim his fourth Drivers' World Championship.
- Andrew Jordan showing that he can mix it with the big guys and come out on top.
- Marc Marquez becoming MotoGP champion at the age of 20.

* What were some of the worst moments of 2013?

- Dario Franchitti's retirement from Motorsport.

* 2014?
- New era Formula 1 cars.
- Factory and Open class MotoGP bikes.
- New talent at McLaren.

Best-
Bernd Scheider winning everything while retired
Blancpain was good enough
Andy Jordan winning BTCC
Marc Marquez becoming a rookie champin

Worst-
Fatalities
F1 getting boring
NASCAR remaining boring
USCC for existing
LMP1 being boring
BTCC becoming a show in bad driving

2014-
New F1 regs
New LMP1 regs

Terrible year.

For now, I'm just going to say this to go under the Looking Forward To category: 2014 will be only the second season for NASCAR's Gen-6 car. The racing with the Gen-6 car should open up, with more chances being taken. Kyle Larson will be making his fulltime move to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as is Austin Dillon. The latter will be piloting the #3 car, a number that hasn't been used in the NSCS since February 2001, when Dale Earnhardt was killed in a crash in the season-opening race. Dillon using the 3 is bound to make many people mad.

Also, the new Grand-Am series should be interesting. I don't know much at all currently, but it'll at kick off with the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. If the race airs on FOX Sports 1, it will be my first Rolex 24h.

For one last thing, I missed the 24 Hours of LeMans this year, which I am indifferent about due to Allan Simonsen's fatal crash (RIP Mr. Simonsen). For 2014, I'm looking forward to seeing the LM 24h, if it airs on FS1, which will also be my first LM 24h.

I'm also looking forward to Tony Stewart's NASCAR return, maybe by capping it off with a Daytona 500 win. Hendrick-powered his cars are, so there is a real threat of a Stewart-Haas Racing win at Daytona, if not Stewart himself.

Good:
- Love it or hate it, Red Bull and Vettel's absolute dominance of the last half of the season is quite impressive.
- The DeltaWing did pretty good, even leading once in a while.
- DPs are becoming more prototype than prototurtle.
- Webber's helmet-off cooldown lap at Brazil.

Bad:
- All the deaths.
- Yay, Jimmie Johnson won the chase. Gen 6 car didn't live up to its expectations.
- USCC and all the nonsense.

2014:
- WEC looks like it'll be awesome.
- F1, likewise.
- NASCAR will probably stay the same.
- USCC will either be epic or will crash and burn (hopefully not literally).

Good:
Falken Tire's win at Petit Le Man's in a 2010 Porsche!
Winterbottom/FPR finally crossing the Bathurst 1000 off the list.
V8 Supercars coming to America.
Ken Block grabbing his first win in RallyCross.

Bad
V8 Supercars not coming back next year to US
Denny Hamlin's year

2014
TORC coming back to Charlotte!
V8SC changes with teams
JPM in Indycar
Stewart Haas with all the characters they have
Rolex 24 with new series

Good
Well nothing much for me was already banking on 2014 and saw this as a whatever year.
One thing I'd say is Loeb and Pikes
Mark Webber to Porsche for WEC
No more NASCAR on ESPN

Bad
Deaths
Horrible wrecks that made this one of the most scariest years in racing across the map I've seen in a long time
Another domination year by RBR
Another domination year by HMS with JJ
(with the last two as said, I wasn't expecting much from this year anyways, the wreck were what caught me off guard and will make it memorable in a bad way)

2014
New F1 Regs
New WTCC regs and Loeb
New Indy regs (e.g. Aero kits start) and JPM back to open wheel
NASCAR Driver shake ups
Porsche and Le Mans
New LMP1 regs
USCR or USCC whatever it finally is.

The Good:

- Well, at least Bottas got his first points...?

The Bad:

- Fatalities again.
- Vettel.
- Vettel.
- Vettel.
- Vettel.
- In general F1 took a major step back from the awesomeness of 2012.
- Jimmie Johnson.
- Clint Bowyer.
- Franchitti's injury.
- Castroneves lost title.

Yes, this year sucked.

I'll take some of this back, got to add that the GP2 racing was absolutely fantastic. Why is it that lower series are always so much better than the biggest ones?
