Meaning it's still a sedan, albeit a very nice looking one.

Don't believe the marketing guff. VW call it a coupe but it's not, by any stretch of the imagination.

Does it make any difference if they offer a hybrid model? Really? They'll offer regular engines anyway so it seems like you're getting worked up over absolutely nothing...
Yes. It means they might not offer a diesel of it.

I wonder if this does mean that we finally get the 1.4 and no longer have to deal with the 2.5.

Put it this way: VAG loves diesel. I can't see them spending the vast amounts of money they do on making some of the world's most efficient and cleanest diesels and then jacking it all in and deciding that hybrids are better.

If they make it, they'll give it a diesel and you'll be getting it. If they offer it there without a diesel I'll eat my pet gerbil.

And I'll share it with you. In fact, when did VW last make a car that didn't come with a diesel engine? Last one I can think of was the Corrado.

They probably will. Maybe not initially, like they did with the Rabbit/Golf, but a diesel seems somewhat inevitable. Methinks that the Jetta TDI Cup would look a bit more legitimate with TDI Coupes running around than the sedans.

It would seem most likely to have VW go about it this way:

"Base" and "Sport" models equipped with the 1.4L TSI, a TSI Hybrid model somewhere in the middle, and probably a TDI model at the top. Possibly even a TDI Hybrid. Considering all the successes that VW has with their TDI program, really across the board, it would be absolutely nonsensical for them to not offer a TDI model. Srsly.

I'm still waiting for them to announce that VW is in fact the car supplier for the new Tron movie.

How about the Mercedes CLS then? Also a sedan?

Edit: Returning to the subject. I think that is a beautiful car. It obviously looks a lot like an A5 but I prefer that to it being a Hyundai Matrix lookalike. I'd probably buy one.

I love the simple design of the thing. Also, what tune will the 1.4 be in? I'd love to see cars running around with the 1.4 TSI with maybe 138 to 158 hp. Because much less just won't be fast at all. Or maybe they'll run more boost and be putting out 168?

I'd really like to see a sporty version with the 2.0 TSI that's in the new GTI.

This thing has me wondering: Is this what we can expect to see of the new Jetta?

EDIT: For those of you who don't mind a bit of reading, the VWVortex article has some good information. The gist:

  • This is in fact a preview of the MKVI Jetta. VW is uncertain of whether or not they want to build a coupe version.
  • VWVortex is saying that the Jetta will have a TDI offering, a NA 2.0 and a 2.0T (probably for the GLI). (The NA 2.0 FSI is rated at 148 bhp).
  • It rides on a completely different platform from the Golf MKVI. It uses extensive component sharing instead, which is VW's new strategy. This also means that the platform should be better suited to sedan duty.
  • It will be built in Mexico and shipped around the world. I wonder if the engines will come from Germany...
  • VW is shooting for a late Q3 release and a price tag of around $17k.

Nice info, from a pretty reliable source. I hadn't realized they were trying to separate the Golf and Jetta, but generally speaking, it makes sense. They've been almost polar opposites since the MKIII generation, and if its going to make each of the cars that much better - I'm all for it.

As for the 1.4TSI under the hood, I was under the impression that the engine made somewhere around 150 BHP, then the added electric motor made something like an extra 20-ish. Or maybe I'm getting it confused with every other hybrid debut in Detroit this year.

I'd also be curious if this was supposed to be a sort of precursor to the MKVII Golf. Maybe they can make a better hatchback without having to worry about the Jetta.

You are right that the NCCC has the 150 PS version of the 1.4T if I had bothered to read the press release. That's the same thing they had in the MK5 Golf, presumably in Europe.

Righty, well if it's essentially the next Golf/Jetta, then have VW used their noggin and made it weigh less than a small moon?...

That rear is very Audi-ish. Not a bad thing as it's a gorgeous car, but it just screams Ingolstadt at the back.
