Game Type: 1st-Person Stealth Adventure
Release Date: 2014

Eidos Montreal, a part of Square Enix Europe and the award winning studio behind the critically acclaimed Deus Ex: Human Revolution, today unveiled Thief for PC, PlayStation 4, and other next generation consoles. Thief is a reinvention of a franchise that helped define an entire genre of games.

Into this shadowy world steps Garrett, The master thief in a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose their path through the game’s levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge.

This looks incredible! I am so excited about this. The right studio, the right time, the right looks (Garrett looks great, btw).

My only gripe is that I can't play this now, lmfao.

All jokes aside, I am very excited for this. I have scans from the Game Informer magazine I'll post here in the morning, if no one beats me to it.

And, as with all games, they've added that "Focus" stuff. They call it it "Instinct" in Hitman, "Survival Instinct" in Tomb Raider, "The Visor" in Crysis 3 or the "Eagle Eye" in Assassin's Creed. And now there's "Focus" in Thief, as can be seen here.

I'm just getting sick of that. Does every darn game need to do that?

A question. Were the earlier games done in this kind of style because that looks a lot like Dishonoured, or is it that Arkane Studios copied the style from the previous Thief games?

Looks good though.

"Thief will do away with the magical elements, including undead and other fantasy creatures."

Kinda sucks, then again I never really liked the undead (and coming after Dishonored and the plague people, would be a bit too similar.)

One of the main things I love about the Thief games is the atmosphere, the environment, the general feel of the world and its steampunkish elements. So hopefully they dont ruin that and it ends up feeling too generic like its just next door to Skyrim's world down the hall from Dishonored's.

And ya, I don't like the Focus/night vision/bat vision stuff in games. It ends up needing to be relied on too much and you end up seeing the whole game through a hazy tinted filter with glowing things all over the place.

I'm already assuming it won't be as good as it should since I have a very pessimistic view of a lot of games (specially reboots and sequels) nowadays, but I'll buy it anyway and hope that I'm wrong.

Dishonoured's development team were very open about using Thief as inspiration. Now, Thief is borrowing from a game which borrowed from it.

So awesome man, holy ****, can't wait.

Playing through Theif 3 again 'cause I'm so hyped.

Assassin's Creed, after 2, can't hold a candle to this series.

Thanks 👍 So a bit like Crystal Dynamic borrowing back what Naughty Dog made of the original TR games :sly:

So, PS4 and other next-gen consoles. That's one more title to the list of games near launch time.

Thief reboot impeded by office politics, high-level departures.

Polygon
In March of this year, the same month as the game's publicity push on the cover of Game Informer magazine, Lead Game Designer Dominic Fleury left the studio.

Sources emphasized the high level of talent and enthusiasm of team members, many of whom came to work on Thief because of their love of the franchise. Those same sources cited team politics and conflicting visions as cause for many departures and setbacks.

The current version of Thief barely resembles the initial concept, says a source. The vertical slice doesn't load inside Thief's current heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3. Many programming tricks were necessary to run the current demonstration, like turning off non-playable character AI — the engine has trouble when too many characters are on screen.

We've heard that Eidos will show the game publicly for the first time at this year's E3 in June.

Launch date confirmed for Feb 25th, 2014 and here's the Gamescom story trailer. It will also come to current gen consoles according to their youtube video description.

I hope they don't change it from a 1st person sneaking game into am adventure type game. Getting rid of magic IMHO is a mistake because it is part of the Thief world. The series has a unique mix of magic, mysticism and pragmatism that makes each faction different and interesting. I used to love hiding in a shadow and listen to guards' conversations.

I also hope that the game had a strong story like Thief 3 had. I stuck with that game because I wanted to see what was happening with Garret.
