What are your thoughts on current car design trends?

Looking at the brand new cars debouting at the Geneva motor show I have to comment on what I like and dislike about the current trends.

I like:
-The rounder shapes and general more "organic" feel of the cars
-Promotion of non-conventional colors like bright green and brown, I hope more drivers buy these colors and escape the conventions

I dislike:
-The narrower and more angular headlights.
For me they don't go all that well with the curvier body

-Too much copying between companies.
I get the feeling they try hard to copy rivals because otherwise they think they might look old and/or strange. I would like more bold executives that would result in more diverse designs.

What do you like/dislike about modern design trends?

The hood line being very distinct:

I dont like how HUGE wheels have been getting.. otherwise a lot are really cool.

What I've noticed with regular cars now is that they've lacked soul for so many years. Cars are so boring these days. They lack any personality. I hate the lack of effort that car companies seem to put in their cars.

- The big mouth.
Mazda, Peugeot and others are all guilty of a massive front intake and then a big black bumper through the middle.

- Wing mirrors.
We don't need them any more. Cameras and screens can replace them easily, benefiting aerodynamics and saving fuel.

Are we just talking lines here? Or can we talk technology? I don't like the gravitation toward electronically assisted everything. I don't need rain sensing windshield wipers, automatic headlights, blindspot detectors, radar cruise control, etc. etc.

Focus on the car (especially reliability) and less on silly gadgets I don't need.

I hate the overcomplicated body designs. Nothing is simple anymore.

I have mixed feelings about this. Basically they give you more eye-candy but while its nice from nearby, from away, as other drivers and pedestrians see the car, it seems de-cohesive.

- Weight
- Large openings in front
- Huge wheels
- Huge headlights / taillights
- Unnecessary accessories

Edit: All dislikes

I don't like how every new model of almost every car that isn't a facelift, just appears to be larger in size and heavier.
I know people want more space and everything, but if you're buying a small car and looking for space, if it isnt obvious enough save up more and go for the bigger car! Car designers need to get that through their heads that weight shouldn't be compromised.
Look at older generation of vehicles and compare them to new...

I like however the overall design of most modern cars, they've really upped their exterior design in the last decade.

One manufacturer that I'm not so sure about is Hyundai, sure they're making more upto date contemporary cars, but theres not one thing that's interesting or attractive that I think of.
Another is Ssangyong...which I don't even need to explain.

I agree with this. Cars like the Versa and Yaris shouldn't be around because the Sentra and Corolla should still be that small. Want a bigger car? Buy an Altima or a Camry.

first thing that pops into my mind about the design are the somewhat generic rear tail lights, they all look similiar to me

Just one thing about lambo aventador and reventon , square , their desing is made of 90º degrees :p

I don't like

I hate LED daytime running lamps, they always look like they were designed for pikeys in mind. What I also dislike in car design is, that we don't see pop-up headlamps anymore, because in cars like F40 or BMW 8-series they looked so cool.

As for Lambo, sharp edges are immensely manly and that's the whole point of their design really.

Like - power, sculpted lines, new technology makes for faster cars in several cases.
Dislike - heavier cars. But I can understand with all the safety built in how that could happen. It makes me long for the days of unsafe cars that were light, which is the genre I will continue to shop in.
- "City cars." Box shapes that are marketed as city or urban cars but look terrible and incredibly uninspiring. Kia Soul, Scion xB, Nissan whatever, as a car guy they get under my skin.

Low front, high rear
Large rims on skinny tires
Enough of the puky greens and browns and silvers. Give me Grabber Blue, Hemi Orange and Purple back.
Overall the appearance doesn't look nice to the eye.

I think that has something to do with new regulations in making the front of cars "safe for pedestrians" should they accidentally walk in front of your car like an idiot. :dunce:

It's probably true, but if Rolls-Royce can make a system that hides the Spirit of Ecstasy in the event of crash, I believe it's possible to do the same trick with headlamps. Those lamps are just not fashionable anymore, which is a shame.

I don't like how car headlights have slowly crept their way up the bonnet to sit over the front wheels instead of on the front of the car. ie Nissan Juke.

The rampant use of CVT transmissions, Automatics in general, and Front Wheel drive.

I used to dislike CVTs as well. After riding in one in the streets though, I changed my mind completely. For a performance car, CVTs are a no-no, but for driving around town, CVTs are great! Ideally, manufactures should have CVTs, autos, and manuals all as options.

Everything, too much plastic, FWD, not enough V8s, no chrome, just UGLY in general.

Since no one is putting in any likes, I figured I'll add a couple:

-Paint jobs look much better now than they used to

-Car interiors have become much more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.

no chrome

Good. I hope chrome never comes back.

Too much plastic I'll agree with but nothing else.

FWD cars can be great fun and if you want to take a RWD car up the mountains here have a good time involuntarily drifting the whole way up. Scary stuff in my girlfriend's Mustang the few times we did it...

Not enough V8s??? Why do you need one? My V6 is plenty fast enough for me and it's one heck of a lot better on gas than a V8. Again my girlfriend's Mustang ate gas just starting it up let alone driving anywhere.

Lots of chrome is never a good thing.... Ever. Doorhandles and around the windows looks good but nothing more.
