Look what Piriform Speccy has to say about my CPU's temperature..
bandicam_2013_05_23_16_52_22_435.jpg

It was going from 98C all the way to 103C. Why is it telling me this? There is no way that my laptop is that hot, the air coming out isn't super hot at all, and I know that an APU will not get that hot, period. So what could it be?
A messed up thermal sensor or something?

Edit - Also it is saying that Core 1's clock speed is 3088MHz...is this thing inaccurate as hell or what?

AMD doesn't name their chips by actual clock speed. When I look it up, I see clock speed of 1900 MHz, and a "turbo" speed of 2800. It does not run at 4500 MHz if that's what you were thinking.

As for temp, the chip is rated for 100 C max. Maybe your laptop is overclocked, and thus a little warm?

Speccy while it a good program, run Hardware Monitor.

To verify the temp, also laptops are prone to overheating, even more so when dust blocks the heatsink fins.

I know that they don't name the processor by clock speed. It usually never goes above 2.6GHz when gaming, and GameBooster 3 tells me that it reaches 62C. Anyway, when I click 'CPU' on Speccy, it shows me the individual speeds of each core and cores 1 and 2 are showing 3000+ MHz while Task Manager is saying 2.2GHz..

I'll check that program out, and there's no way this laptop could be having overheating problems, I've only had it for a couple weeks.

OK, I thought you were coming at it from the other direction, assuming 3.088 was low. Sorry.

As for overheating, being new doesn't mean it ain't. Years ago I delivered a server that overheated from day one. Eventually found that the proc heat sink was installed with some kind of thermal film instead of real thermal paste. I don't know if that was something experimental or what, but a smeared it up with a dab of paste and took the film out, it's been fine for 6 years.

But I doubt that's anything like your issue. It looks like your monitor utility doesn't quite understand your hardware.

Core Temp displays correct temperatures on my AMD processor, you should try it if HWMonitor shows you some crazy temperatures. You can put CPU temperature, frequency and load monitoring in the Taskbar to get a quick look.

There is also SpeedFan if everything else fails.

Also check and see what the BIOS is showing as this will give you the most accurate information.

Even OEM computers show this infomation

How do I check the bios?

Anyway, I downloaded CoreTemp and it's fine now. It's saying 55C which is normally what I get, I just hoped it wasn't a poorly attached heatsink or something.

Also, what is TJ Max? TJ Max on this processor is 100C. Is it the max temperature that the processor can handle before it starts damaging itself?

Edit. Sorry. Missed the core temp program remark. Was going to suggest insufficient thermal paste during assembly.

Usually most motherboard bios's will shutdown the computer if CPU temp reaches 80C or so. It's a changeable setting, but a standard I think.

If your heatsink wasn't attached properly, (ie not pressed down on the cpu) your cpu would overheat very rapidly. Might not even make it past POST'ing.

Not the motherboard, but the CPU.

Once it hits its thermal junction max(TJMax) it will shut down the whole system.

Also at times your cpu can have a bad temperature sensor in it and it will show crazy things.

BIOS keys are normally.

F2, Del, F10(HP and Compaq)
