The Speed World Challenge Touring Car series is one of the most closely contested championships in the world. Upwards of thiry production-based touring cars hit the track at each round to do battle. What I'm attempting to do is build up the interest of GTPlanet's OLRers in an attempt to at one point have a Long Race Series version running a schedule similar to that of the real series. This has been attempted before on GTPlanet, yourlocalgod started a series similar but was unable to stay the course. The man who stepped up and took charge was none-other than our very own Duke. Duke and I discussed the series via PM and I've made some conclusions about why the previous attempt lost its lustre.

In an attempt to fix those problems, I've put together what I think may be a viable formula to run a series, or create interest for a long series. We will run three races I feel are on tracks that are similar to that of the 2006 TC (Touring Car) schedule. The series will be run in GT Mode to allow competitors to construct their very own World Challenge Touring Cars.

If more interest is expressed I'll post car specs and more detailed information relating to the series. For our purposes the races will be short and each round will consist of qualifying and race sessions.

The three rounds we'd compete at are:

Round 4: Infineon Raceway / Infineon Raceway (Stock Car Course)

Round 7: Road America / Deep Forest Raceway

Round 10: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca / Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

If you have questions about the cars, or just questions in general feel free to post here.

This warrants a double post.

World Challenge
Purpose: The purpose of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Championships is to provide teams, manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers a competitive production-based race series in which to prove their products.

Race Length: There is a 50-minute maximum time limit for every race, with the number of laps and total distance being determined by track configuration, lap times and race conditions.

Homologation of Vehicles: In addition to the general series rules that apply to all homologated vehicles, each vehicle model that is homologated into the World Challenge Series has a set of specifications assigned to it on a Vehicle Technical Specification sheet (VTS) in order to give equivalent overall performance capabilities to a wide range of vehicles. Adjustments to a vehicle’s VTS sheet will be made until a competitive package is developed. Vehicles may be submitted for homologation up to a year before it goes on general sale to the public, and until that particular bodystyle goes out of production throughout the world.

Eligibility: Cars that have been homologated for competition in the World Challenge Series are eligible for a full-year of competition from the time it is homologated, until that particular body style has been out of production throughout the world for five (5) years. After a body style has been out of production for five (5) years, it may continue to compete in no more than four (4) races per year with a single driver, for an additional (5) years.

Competition Adjustments: In order to keep the competition close within the World Challenge Series, competition adjustments will be made to a vehicle model when deemed necessary. Competition adjustments will primarily be done through adjustments to the Appendix A base weight, the RPM limit and/or the required restrictor size.

R.E.W.A.R.D.S. System: Rewarding of Equalizing Weight Assigned to Reduce Driver Sensitivity, commonly referred to as “REWARDS Weight,” is a weight equalization system based on the addition and subtraction of ballast weight based on the finishing position of individual drivers in the previous race(s). The goal of the REWARDS System is to provide close on-track competition between a diverse variety of cars in the top third of the field. REWARDS System weight adjustments are in effect for the next race in which a driver competes in the same class. Weight adjustments (in pounds) are as follows:

Touring Car
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th
+30 +20 +10 +/- 0 -10 -20 -30

Team Compensation Weight: Car/driver combinations finishing outside the top 50 percent of finishing positions, may remove 50 lbs. each time until a maximum of –100 lbs. off Appendix A base weight is reached, or the car/driver combination finishes within the top 50 percent of finishing positions. When a car/driver combination finishes within the top 50 percent of finishing positions, 50 lbs. shall be added back on each time until the car/driver combination reaches the Appendix A base weight. A car/driver combination is not eligible to remove weight, or required to add it back on, unless it is classified as a finisher.

Manufacturers’ Championship Points: Only those car manufacturers that are corporate members are eligible to receive points toward the Manufacturers’ Championship. Points are awarded to a manufacturer based on its highest finishing position in each class. Points are disbursed as follows: 1st, 9 pts; 2nd, 7; 3rd, 5; 4th, 3; 5th, 2; 6th, 1. One point is awarded to the manufacturer scoring the pole position.

Drivers’ Championship Points: A Drivers’ Champion will be named in each class. Points are awarded to the drivers based on their finishing position in each class. The points for all races are awarded as follows: 1st, 30 pts.; 2nd, 27; 3rd, 25; 4th, 23; 5th, 21; 6th, 20; 7th, 19; 8th, 18; 9th, 17; 10th, 16; 11th, 15; 12th, 14; 13th, 13; 14th, 12; 15th, 11; 16th, 10; 17th, 9; 18th, 8; 19th, 7; 20th, 6; 21st, 5; 22nd, 4; 23rd, 3; 24th, 2; 25th, 1.

In addition to the base point system, one point will be awarded to any driver who leads a lap in each class and one point to the driver who leads the most laps in each class per race. In case of a tie, the driver with the highest finishing position will be awarded the point. The top five qualifiers will be awarded points as well, as follows: 1st, 5 pts.; 2nd, 4 pts.; 3rd, 3 pts.; 4th, 2 pts.; 5th, 1 point.

Rookie of the Year: Both the SCCA SPEED GT and Touring Car Championships will recognize the Rookie driver scoring the most points as its Rookie of the Year. A rookie is someone who has started no more than three races in a given season or five in his/her career and has not won a race. Rookie status must be confirmed by SCCA Pro Racing.

Jim Cook Memorial Trophy: An annual award honoring the memory of James Edwin Cook (1939-1985) is presented at season’s end to an entrant/driver who has made significant contributions to the overall success of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Championships through promotional activities and a consistent display of good character and sportsmanship. The award was started during the Endurance Championship era. Previous winners were Tommy Morrison (1985), Rick Hurst (1986), Dave Wolin (1987), Steve Saleen (1988), Tommy Archer (1989), Doc Bundy, Scott Lagasse and Lotus USA (1990), Lotus USA (1991), Doug Rippie/Dieline (1992), Chris Neville (1993), Kermit Upton III (1994), David Rosenblum (1995), Saleen/Allen Racing (1996), RealTime Racing (1997), DC Sports (1998), Turner Motorsport (1999), Team Tech Racing/Scott Bove (2000), Phil McClure (2001), Rod Bymaster/Audi (2002), Jim Osborn (2003), Tim Wiens (2004), Jon Groom (2005).

Zimmermann Cup: An annual award presented in the memory of multi-time Championship winning crew chief Jerome Zimmermann (1967-2003) at season’s end to the crew chief that best exemplifies the similar passion, dedication and success Zimmermann had in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge. Last season’s winner was Dax Raub/3R-Racing (2003), Jason Marks/Bimmerworld (2004), Tivadar Heinlein/Jon Groom Racing (2005).

For our purposes, I doubt the races will be 50 minutes in length. Points scoring and rewards weight are the two sections I've bolded as they are the most important.

Sign me up! :D I'll take one of the RTR Acura TSX's. It would be nice to have the GT series ran along with this, if you make it into a long race series, after this is finished.

If this thing flies there will definitely be a GT. I've already developed a few GT cars.

Right now I can say that cars confirmed for our three race series here are the:

Acura TSX, BMW 325/328(c)i, Mazda 6, Dodge SRT-4, Acura RSX and Ford Focus.

m.piedgros

We are a little while away from that. I will post round-specific threads detailing all you need to know about qualifying and the race. For now, I'm still trying to garner some interest with this thread. If you guys wish I will post the universal and car mods.

m.piedgros

Welcome aboard Evo7GTA and Thundercat! GN+ I am currently working out a few options on trying to get the Impreza into the series. It may end up being a Legacy instead. Look out for more info.

EDIT: By midnight central tonight we should know whether or not the Volkswagen Bora can fit our regs. The regulations may be flexible as the BMW had to push the regs to be homologated.

Universal Mods are as follows:

Oil Change, Exhaust & Air Filter: Sports, Engine Balancing, Racing Chip, Transmission: Full Customize, Flywheel(Open), Clutch(Open), Limited Slip Diffriential(Open), Suspension: Full Customize, Sports: Medium(S2) Tire, Increase Rigidity, Straight Type A Wing.

For certain cars, BMW 330i for one, not all of the above upgrades can be installed/performed so wait untill I post the car specific mods to build your car.

m.piedgros

EDIT 1: Carbon driveshafts are illegal. Reason: Cars competing in Touring class may replace driveshaft. Replacement must be made out of the same materials as stock.

EDIT 2: The Bora is confirmed.

EDIT 3: There are 12 seats available. Check the interest check post to see which manufacturer and teams have a seat free.

I just watched the Denver Touring Car Championship today and Acura did excellent with their 2 RSX' and the TSX. To bad BMW's car wasnt done.
anybody else watch it?

Yeah. If you want to discuss the race go to the Speed World Challenge thread in Drifting and Other Motorsports. This thread is dedicated to our Short Race Series only.

m.piedgros

We haven't drawn a whole lot of interest. Would you registered drivers be willing to start our first race with this small a field?

m.piedgros

From the response I've recieved from yesterday mornings PM statement, it would appear we're all ready to race. The first race thread will be up at my earliest convenience.

CAR SPECS ARE IN FIRST POST!!! Build those cars now.

I built my car last night, I'll have to add the 50kg ballast to it then. Also, do you mind if we change the stock wheels to aftermarket ones?
