Here is the TV we have now

The picture is great, but the size sucks. Sitting 12' away makes it look like our laptop screen.

Anyway....We've been getting a lot of hand me down stuff from the in-laws. That we needed. Like a practically new mattress. And now, it's gonna be her moms entertainment center. We had planned on getting a bed with our tax refund, but now we don't have to worry about that. So, if we sell our current entertainment center and sell this current tv, we should be able to get a decent TV if we dip into the tax refund too.

I have a PS3 and a mediocre surround sound system if that makes any difference.

I at least want 1080P and better than 60hz if it's an LCD TV. Other than that, I'm up for any suggestions. The entertainment center can hold a TV 48" wide. I don't need the latest LED 3D INTERNET GOOGLE whatever TV. More concerned with proper size and picture quality. Looking to spend no more than $700.

For a great product that's usually cheaper than everyone else, look at Vizio. They usually stuff features into their TVs that are usually not on the competitors in the same price range. When I bought my 42" Vizio (e420vl) around 7 months ago, it was just about the only sub $1000 tv on the market that was 120hz. That said, check out amazon.com and newegg.com for TVs in your price range and sort the listing by best rating/best selling. Then narrow your choices down to some that have the features you're looking for. Panasonic's Viera series is really good, as well as Sony's Bravia.

Try going to Hhgreggs, I saw a commercial the other day for a 1080p LCD flat screen at 46" for $400.

Best buy is having deals for 50 inch panasonic plasma for 599$. Arguably the best picture you can get on any TV. Mine looks great and I paid way more then that 2 years ago.
As far as the 1080p goes, you can't tell the difference between it and 720p. My sister has the exact same tv as me only hers is the 720p version and the pictures both look great. Unless your getting a projector with a super big screen don't worry about the 1080p vs 720p debate. I'm sure someone else will say other wise but I really don't think you can tell the difference even in a side by side comparison on 50 inch or less.

the 720p vs 1080p I'm not sure about. But, I feel like if I'm going to drop the money on a TV and I have a PS3 that can output 1080p, I should buy something that is 1080P. I will have to look at the TV myself. Because $599 for a 50" Plasma is really making my mouth water. lol
