Seriously... I can't be the only one trying it? (And failing)

Current record is in the low 3:08s. Was disappointed to be 9 seconds off the record (stuck between 140 and 150 on the board), but then I realized, it's a 3 minute lap, the entire top ten is cutting the pit exit, the entire top twenty is using the 280Z (I used the 240ZG) and I'm only about 5+ seconds off the top 240ZG DS3 driver on the leaderboards after one night's practice.

Then I went and wasted another night on a Bluebird, thinking the available turbo upgrade and extra stability would provide a benefit despite the 1040 kg weight. No dice... still half a second slower than my Z.

I'm thinking the 280Z drivers got it right... most displacement of eligible cars, probably the best brakes. Haven't got one cycled through my UCD yet, though... rats.

Anyone else butting their head against this?

I had a go at this myself I also used the 240zg which got me to below 500th I only had 3 tries though. After my last go I checked the leaderboards and noticed the top 10 were mostly using the 280z , so I checked the ucd as it had just cycled and there was one waiting for me :). Im yet to try it out though.

I got the 71er 240ZG too. Couldn't find the 280Z at the UCD till today. Was on Position 52 last time I checked with 3:14.952. But I was also cutting the pit exit following the ghost of the guy with the 3:11.7.
Don't know how it should be possible to reach a 2:08 with that car. But maybe they got the setting right. I only put the ride height -15mm,

You a DS3 user, too? Or wheel? You're talking about the top 240Z driver, on the first page?

3:08 seems huge... but it's a 3 minute lap. 2 seconds a minute between you and the top guy can come down to better throttle control and precision.

Have yet to go again with my 240Z. Stuck at 3:17 flat with a horrid tune (and yes, I cut the pit exit, too... when in Rome...)

What I can't get is how these guys are finding all that extra speed with TCS. When I turn it on, all I get is bog.

No I use the t500 wheel. I can constantly run 3:15 - 3:16 times (now, not when I started)
Still got not the perfect lap feeling.
I've all aids off except abs to 1 and driving line (not using to show me the way, but I can set my breaking points easier with it), ff to 10.

What I've noticed that the some of the fast ones use high gears through the corners. That helps to reduce the spinning and the car does not break out so much

the entire top ten is cutting the pit exit,

Sure, its all part of the track. We are not running for example a WRS event. :)
and who is using TCS? Can´t find anyone in the top ten.
And Myteron71 managed a 3.10,907 with the 240ZG. 👍

Make sure your setup is working well, and that you are using the right tune. ;)

I was looking through the top 20 the other day... saw a few noted as using TCS... can't remember who... but everyone is using ABS. Maybe the leaderboard has changed.

I've gone on a break from the TT to do my first enduro... practiced my consistency there (still sucks).

I believe that I can come within another two or three seconds of the top... hoping to get within 3:15 on my next sortie. I think I've given up on the Bluebird... the extra torque and revs over my 240 just aren't enough to make up for the weight.

I consider the pit exit part of the track, too. It's that small patch of grass between the exit and the road that's causing me a crisis of conscience. I guess if you jump the curb hard enough, you don't technically touch it...

As an aside... what all mods do you have for the 197 power cap?

I'm not even doing this challenge, but I wanted the 280Z for Japanese Classics in A-spec...been playing since Nov, lvl 31, and still have not seen a 280Z come through my UCD.

Sorry for the hijack.

Just keep going... it'll come eventually. The 280Z came through my UCD weeks ago. Thing was, I wanted a 240Z instead, so I passed it by.

When this challenge came up, I reviewed the specs and realized a Z would be the best car. Spent a while, found a 240. Went online and found out the 280 was faster... but I still haven't seen one go through again.

I knocked 2 secs off my laptime last night using the 280Z after just a couple of laps and finished with a 3.10:300. I now know how to get a 3.08 but no chance of getting a 3.07. All I did to improve my time was increase the final drive to 155mph and I also realised I messed up my build of the 280Z. So I went searching for another 280Z in the USD and now my car is around 5mph faster!

I forgot to add that in the 280Z its much quicker to change gear at 6000RPM.

Interesting. I can´t find any grass, maybe you can make a pic from it?

I believe he's talking about this (at 1:26):

Jumping over the grass here is a few tenths faster as you can carry more speed through the chicane and have a better entry to the following hairpin.

I need to find another 280z as well since it seems to be faster with dirty oil ;) My car loses so much in acceleration and plain straightline speed that it's almost impossible for me to reach solid 3:07s. 1 or 2 tenths off is possible as I messed up two corners on my lap but thats all I can do with my current car.

Just a little question: What do you get as a prize? I m not even that good, only top 700.

What do you get for Top 1000/500/100 etc? Anything at all?

After making a few adjustments including parts i've now got mine going much faster. For instance my speed approaching the 1st bend is 126mph rather than 124 and the part where your car gets airborne my car is now doing 100mph approaching the jump instead of 96mph. Trouble is I haven't had chance to test this yet but I did improve my time to a 3.09:700 earlier.

The problem for me is my suspension, drivetrain ,brakes are all default because im clueless when it comes to tuning. Maybe I should strike a deal with you and you help me with the tuning and I shall tell you what parts i've put on my car. I've tried all sorts and the parts on my car are definitively the best combination that i've tested so far.

I will add I really would appreciate your help with the tuning. Im okay with FF, AWD but the oversteer is killing my laptimes on rear wheel drive cars. This would help me with future time trials. Send me a PM or friend request because it would be nice to have friends who also enjoy hotlapping like yourself.

Absolutely nothing im afraid. I finished 5th round London and didn't get any credits but to be honest this isn't why I do the time trials. I just love hotlapping.

Ditto. All you get is the satisfaction of seeing your name up on the board. For me, at least getting into the Top 100 is enough.

Haven't really had time to do this... have been building money in my accounts in preparation for another go. 3:10? No suspension tuning? Jeebus. I'll be happy to get to 3:12 even with!

Stupid me... didn't think of the dirty oil trick. I suppose this is so you can get the meatier powerband of a better engine build without clipping the power limit? I've done that with other cars, but I didn't think about that here.

Hi Zkippe, welcome to the Planet. 👍

Ah, this Pit Exit.
And yes, i think you need a new car. My one is now full tuned, more is not possibly. ;)

I didn't until I noticed the dirty oil on someones replay.

Have to say these time trials are quiet time consuming. For starters it took me ages to find the 280Z in the USD and then its took me a while finding the right parts to get to 197bhp. I only wish I realised all of this sooner and spent more time on this TT.

Few things I have noticed about GT5 and I shall list them below.

1. Having the correct final drive and changing gear at the correct RPM can knock nearly 2secs off your laptime.

2. Definitively having dirty oil which allows extra parts is faster. As I type my B Spec driver is driving 22 laps around Indy because ideally I need to lose just 1bhp.

3. No idea why but if you upgrade your car by using the engine parts rather than exhaust, intake, the handling seems better. When I put engine stage 2 on my car I seem to have alot less understeer than when I used engine stage 1 and racing exhaust.

Oh, by the way, welcome to GTPlanet, Zkippe. Awesome lap there till it was knocked off the top. Haven't logged into the TT yet today, though... so don't know where you're standing.

The final drive issue is understandable. It's the same as in the Schwim event on Cape Ring. You're climbing so much on this track and the car has so little power that minor gearing changes can eke out a ton of time. I was really hoping that going with the Bluebird and it's wider powerband (when turbo'd) would help avoid this issue... but with a 40 kg handicap and just 5 gears, no go.

Dirty oil... it seems that the power loss gets progressively worse the closer you get to power peak. So it's possible to make a boatload of extra torque from a better engine build under the same peak power versus having the peaky power you get from a cleaner, less powerful build.

Handling.... errh... lighter engine parts mean a less nose-heavy car?

Great battling with KOR_Crow. 👍

by the way, shows the wrong track at the pic. :)

I was reading this thread and decided to give it a go, as I have a 280z, I didn't do any setup, just drove it with all the mods and managed 45th. I didn't do an oil change and got 197 bhp. This car seems to handle very well, I think it would be hard to get such a good time in anything else that qualifies.

It sucks that the 280z is the best car for this race but impossible to find, been searching the UCD every moment I can.

Does the winner of the time trial event get any rewards?

No, you get nothing for winning as far as I know.

Too bad this one is closing. Between not having time to do the PSN update and having a lot of trips out for work, I don't think I'll be able to put in a truly serious lap before they lock it.
