With all the talk of the budget cap and ferrari leaving the sport, everyone seems to have forgotten about the medals system that is being used next year. I was thinking what if the WDC was decided by the driver who over the entire year of racing, took the least amount of time to finish the year.
example: winner in aus takes 1.45 hours to finish the race, then add the time it takes to finish the next race and so on. No points for the drivers at all. just time, the driver with the least amount of time in the championship wins the title. Kinda like strokes in golf. If a driver fails to finish the race for whatever reason they get the entire two hours of the race for that race. i havnt thought what could happen if no one finishes within the two hour time period, or if the race is called off, ie: malaysia this year. Maybe someone on this board could come up with a decent soloution to this.
Anyways, it would make all the drivers all the way down to dead last try to go as fast as possible to get there time down.
The WCC would still be done by the points system.
This is just a rough idea, but I think it would be a decent way to decide the best/fastest driver of the year, if the idea was refined and all the kinks worked out.
Any thoughts???
 
Actually, I think Ecclestone has abandoned medals altogether. They were going to come in for this year, but the idea was scrapped because it was too close to te beginning of the season at the time. The idea was postponed until 2010, but then dropped outright.
 
I was watching a recap show for the Spanish Grand Prix on SPEED last night, and some commentator whose name I didn't catch (not one of the race commentators) proposed an interesting system. He suggested that, if Bernie were still intent on creating a new points system, that there were a sort of weighing factor for each of the different tracks based on things like difficulty and prestige. For example, he recommended that Monaco be given a factor of 2.0, and Spa and Monza getting a factor of 1.8, with newer tracks like Bahrain getting a factor of 1.3 and Valencia getting a 1.0. And in order to sell it to Bernie, he gets to set the factors. It would help him line his pockets, give F1 a new, unique point system, and consistency would still matter for something.

Personally, I think it's a bit dangerous handing so much power to Bernie, but if a drastic change were inevitable, I think I would welcome this system before any others.
 
10 for the win then 6, 4, 3, 2 & 1 for sixth. They should never have tried to fix what wasn't broken in the first place.

No other points system required.

I think that's dangerous because it invalidates certain races. If you win in Valencia, you should get the same amount of points as you would for winning in Monza.

Well it was broken when Schumacher came along ;)

I think the current system is fine but the FOTA proposal is great - where it rewards wins and podiums more.
