Mods-Couldn't find any threads directly relating to this. If this seems to be too similar to another thread i understand if its locked.

SO my whole GT career has been played with the standard PS2/PS3 controllers. I have always been a Square mashing X pusher. It was not until GT5 that i realized how much you benefit from gradually giving gas (Throttle Control) instead of holding it down immediately. I have never switched up my button configuration and have always told myself that i don't need to. Im here to say that I'm wrong and that there is a more productive way. R2-gas L2-break, as i have read here, is much more beneficial and you have a lot more control of the throttle.

SOOOO My question is as stated in the title, Is There Any Tips you can give to me (and anyone else learning) for just learning this new button layout? Im not the most talented driver in GT and i just have of recently been able to be somewhat competitive with all aids off but ABS-1. There are a few Seasonal Events i may have to use one more but I'm putting a lot of time into learning to drive without any but ABS.

Im afraid switching my Button Configuration is going to put me back to level 0. So any help, tips, hints, magic spells you can give me would be appreciated! Thank you for taking the time!

GT5 - licence tests
Practice on those and you'll get it in no time.
It's much more simple than switching between dir.buttons and analog stick for steering (I presume you switched on those allready).

Honestly the only thing that's going to help you is practice. Resist the urge to switch back to your old way of doing things and focus on getting better with the new layout. It will be painful and frustrating but it will come in time and you'll be faster for it.

I switched after many, many years of playing GT. After you reconfigure your DS3 to your new setup, change the old ones to NA, so you're forced to use the new setup. Keep practicing & maybe play other driving games with that setup and you'll find it becomes second nature. Good luck with the switch. 👍

how do you have more control of the throttle if the triggers arent as precise as the stick in motion & muscle pressure? the only gain i see is you can use the brakes at the same time as gas

i almost have gold in gt5's red bull challenges (silver on suzuka, 1.2 secs behind gold), should i still consider switching?

(on a related note, i can do sims or things like trackmania with merely a keyboard quite well)

I've been playing since gt1 and I didn't have an analog controller. At first moving from the d-pad to stick was insane! Now, I can't even imagine playing like that. Getting used to gas\break as L2\R2 was difficult, but soft hands can lead to great lap times regularly. Start over with crap cars to get used to it, do not reset the game data though.

i really like the sticks, it quickly felt right when i first got gt5 a few years ago

hmm... midnight club is triggers.... & my driving is a bit twitchy, sometimes binary... suppose i can handle the triggers now that i think about it

I was in exactly the same boat only a month or two ago, I realised that the face buttons for brake and accelerate were costing me (not to mention the d-pad for steering), and besides, my hands ached after a while with my old method, so I decided to just take the plunge.

The first week I did it was the Peugeot Seasonal around London. As was mentioned earlier, starting in a slightly under-powered car is easiest because you have to retrain your brain and it will take some hours of repetition. By the end of that seasonal though I don't even remember the old way I drove. I am as fast, if not faster, than I was before and now I have the ability to modulate every aspect of the car exactly as a wheel driver can...I'm not great at it yet but at least I'm back at my previous skill level with the capacity for more improvement, as opposed to stagnating with on/off controls.

It's exactly as @Sarkazmo said, practice it and resist the urge to go back...you won't regret it. I had used default setup since GT3 and was worried about how long it would take to change, I was shocked at how quickly I retrained my brain (and I'm old!)

Thank you everyone for all the input!. Sorry for not posting back here sooner. Somehow i accidentally disabled my alerts for this thread.
@sosa - Yes, Thx God i learned steering with the analog sticks from the very beginning. Could not imagine how frustrated i would have gotten using the D-pad to steer!

@Sarkazmo - Well said bro. I have been procrastinating switching over for a wile now. I think after I'm happy with my GTAcademy times i will take the plunge. Im really bummed i didn't try switching in the past. This last End of the Month of May has been filled with a bunch of things i think i could have gotten a better time if i was using the R2/L2 buttons.

@PapaGnr - That is good advice i will definitely make sure to do. Erase My old ways once and for all! If i did have another racing game i would practice on it. But the only others i have are the other GTs. and after online has been pulled for GT5... well i just havnt looked back.

@kn00tcn - Not sure if i wasn't being clear enough or maybe you missed it. Im looking to switch from X and square to the triggers. I never said that the triggers were better than using the sticks for accelerating and braking. As a meter of fact i was very on the fence for a bit deciding if i wanted to switch to triggers or sticks. Cuz ur exactly right about being precise and muscle pressure. I hope my post doesn't come off as negative towards you. I appreciate your input. I just wasn't very clear if you were talking to me when u said this-

Man props to you starting off on the D-pad. Im sure you saw ur times get a lot better once you got used to using the sticks. I think that you are right, that it would be a good idea to start off with lower pp cars at first. I might go thru the Career mode again as if i started a new game Using basic cars. hahaha and yes i won't reset the game data.

@MisterWeary - Dude my hands will hurt after long hours as well. feel cramped up and stiff. Im glad to hear that you feel faster. Thats what I'm going for in the long run with the switch:tup:
