Between getting my paycheck AND receiving Christmas money in one week, I feel as though I need to spend some of it on something silly, so I can save the rest.

Gamestop has a refurbished Xbox 360 for $160. It's the original one- My worry is that Red Ring of death thing. How often does that occur? I'd hate to buy it, and then right after the warranty expires in a few weeks, have it go. Mainly, I would be purchasing it to play Minecraft, Halo, FM4, and possibly F1 2012(As I've heard the framerate is smoother?)

Anywho, what are the ins and outs of Xbox purchasing? If the risk is too high, I'm not even going to bother. Plus, I'd only want to buy like 3-6months worth of Live at a time, since I will be off to college. At which point, I'd be tempted to trade it back in anyways.

I would buy a new one if I was you. 160 for a old used one is damn pricy. Old one also dont have HDMI output.

A new one on newegg with Forza 4 and skyrim (good game also if you dont want it you can still resell or trade it) can be bought for 250 USD. It also comes with a 250gb HD which is nice to speed the things a bit (by installing game on HD).

I agree with RX-7. Even if you sell the unopen Skyrim for 30 dollars, you're still only paying 60 dollars more for a new one. I know that that's nothing to sneeze at, but I think it's worth it for the brand new console and warranty factor. Also, if you were going to buy Forza 4, which I don't think is included in the used XBox bundle, you're looking at $160 + $40, which puts you at $200. In the end, you're looking at a price difference of only about $20.

If it's an original Xbox 360 don't buy it. I had 6 of them get the red rings. Out of probably 12 of my friends we all had at least 3 or 4 of them red ring. I've had 3 of the newer ones for a few years now and none of them have died yet.

If you want to get a used one, make sure to get one of the Elites. The 120GB models of the old fat Xbox360. They're pretty reliable, as they've had the RROD issue fixed on them. But it'd be better to just get one of the Holiday Value Packs.

I would get one of the new ones, my friend had the original. It was horrifically loud, and if a little but of weight was placed on the side the plastic would bend inwards and scratch the disc while is spinning.
He ruined a couple of games like that.

Better to be safe than sorry.

As Luminis said, if you are going to get an old one get an elite model. These also had hdmi port.

Also Pagey is right aswell, the old (phat) consoles are a lot louder then the new (slim) ones.

Personally get a new one for cheap an then just buy a western digital 250 - 320 Gb cavier black hard drive an put it in the console.

I use to repair (still can) 360 that had RROD, it's not hard but just a pain and it's not a guaranteed fix. I do have 1 console I did about a year ago an it's still going strong. It's strictly offline use only though, people who know about "offline only" will know what I mean :sly:👍

I found this thread 2 years later :) and I have a hard drive question. I have an old 360 (white one from 2006) that has the Red Ring. I want to sell it as broken, but wanted to make sure none of my info is stored in the console itself. It has a couple of small memory units, and an external hard drive (I'll keep all). So I'm just selling the console. Is that safe to do?

I think the Slim models don't have the RRoD, I have one slim for over 4 years, put a chip on it and stills works as fine as ever

The main thing that it will store is game purchase licenses. So if you have bought anything from the xbox live market place (games/DLC) anyone would be able to play them (even if you keep your devices). This can be fixed by buying/getting another console and transferring your licenses to the new/other console (note: live connection is needed).
If you have used a credit card.... you may be 🤬 as you have to ring M$ (microsoft) and jump through about 50 million hoops to get them to remove the details, but I'm not sure if they are saved on console profile or player profile data with xbox.
