GTPlanet, I was watching my favorite sports show earlier today, "Pardon the Interruption." During the Big Finish segment today, Michael Wilbon of the Washington Post reported that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was booed at the Coca-Cola 600. Dale Jr. didn't win the longest NASCAR race on the schedule, so apparentely fans were displeased with his performance, not to mention Dale Jr. whacking his own teammate, Michael Waltrip. So what kind of favoritism is in play? Remember last year? Jeff Gordon won at Talladega fair and square, upsetting Little E at 'Dega. What happens? Fans soil his car with food, trash, empty soda cans and empty beer cans. So GTP, another thread, so let's do it.
This is one reason why I'm dedicated to road racing, namely GT and sportscar racing. I hope I don't disappoint certain fans, but Dale Jr. hasn't proven anything so far. He's never won the Nextel Cup (his late father won over 7 titles before his death at age 49), he's never won a race this season (as of 5/31/2005), and to have race fans just boo him at the Coca-Cola 600 is pretty downright absurd. You can't be foolish. I don't follow NASCAR every day, but Jeff Gordon is my favorite racer. When he doesn't win, I'm not crying like a baby or wanting to bust out my TV with a shotgun. I think if most Dale Jr. fans were true loyalists, even if he places 43rd in the final rankings, they should be proud for him even though he tried his best. Why did fans boo Dale Earnhardt Jr.? I have no real idea. I really don't. Talladega last year, Dale Jr. loses to Jeff Gordon, fans dump crap on J. Gordon. Dale Jr. doesn't win at the Coca-Cola 600, fans boo him. Or why did they boo him? I think some people just need to wise up. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not Michael Schumacher, Derek Bell, Mark Skaife, Peter Brock, Jacky Ickx, Damon Hill, Juan Miguel Fangio, or any of them. He hasn't grown to a dynasty yet. Leave the man alone and let him win races and championships. THEN follow him to glory. THEN cement his name in American racing history.
So GTPlanet, do you think some NASCAR fans have TOO MUCH favoritism for Dale Earnhardt Jr.? What would you suggest? Reply on.
