Took PS2 controller apart and forgot to put a part in; What did I forget to put in

I took my controller apart last night to fix its X button/contact problem before I buy GT4 today and well I forgot to put a part inside. It looks somewhat like a cross and has pivot/ball/sphere like thing in the middle, I can take pics of it tomorrow. It's about a inch or so in length and about a 3/4in height looks like a +.

That sounds like the pad that goes under either the Dpad or the x, triangle, circle, square buttons.

Looks like you found the problem with the X-button. The little cross thing you left out is broken and will cause the button not to work.
