Rolling Stone 500

I have a few quarrels with this list. this may come off as a rant, but they're really discussion starters.

1. Why are most of the songs from the 60s and 70s? Do recent songs really suck that much? or are all the judges just old farts?

2. Why are many of the songs from the 90s from rap groups like the Beastie Boys, Eminem and Dr. Dre?

3. hmmm... Rolling Stone chose numerouos songs with "Rolling Stone" in the title or songs by the Rolling Stones. :odd:

Discuss!

I can't believe that there is not a SINGLE Alice In Chains song on that list. Blasphemy.

Every heard the phrase, "to withstand the test of time?" These are songs that made popular music change in one way or the other. No amount of inclusion in movie soundtracks or TV commericials has diluted their impact.

Oh please, Sabotage was #475. It should have been higher. And that was the only Beastie Boys song on the 500 list.

As for Dre and Eminem...You've got me there. I can't stand him: There's nothing extraordinary about him, unless the state of hip-hop is that freakin' bad in the past 5 years. Then again, maybe I'm missing something.

On the other hand...This one surprised me: It never was once played on the radio!
417 **** tha Police N.W.A. 1989

Eruption/You Really Got Me is not on that list, nor is any Van Halen song. How massively influential songs and bands like that get left off the list, while crap like Hey Ya get on is just beyond me.

At least Radiohead had two entries :indiff:

Oh, and as for the whiney whiners whining about no "rap or otha kool stuf" making the list, consider this. Will Eminem still be played in 50 years time? I think not.

Surely one major flaw in this list is that most songs are those made famous from a singles release. I would have thought the greatest songs are those that are the best that particular band/songwriter etc produced. Certainly many would have been a single, but not as many as this list suggests.

There's far too many Rolling Stones songs. I personally never liked them, though that's more to do with Jaggers vocals than the actual songs. And I don't think all the Beatles songs are merited (I can't stand Yesterday).
Nice to see Thin Lizzy creeping in at 499!

I'd much prefer a top 500 albums.

I can't believe "Hey Ya" made a list of Top 500 Rock Songs. That is pure crap. Also, Aretha Franklin. She may have been great, I don't doubt that, but not "Rock".

Yet another piss poor list from Rolling Stone.

Ack.
I couldn't agree more. Rolling Stone haven't produced a decent list of anything yet. In fact, I wouldn't trust them with my Grocery List.

no satriani, no santana, no steve vai, and no Judas Priest. It really *must* be a ****ty list. I can't believe they have NWA but not Public Enemy. That's like an insult to rap to say that NWA was a better group or had better songs than PE

Fight the Power and Bring da Noise are both on the list, last I saw.

Hey Ya still has no place on this list.

I didn't see them there i guess

Hey Ya still has no place on this list.
yup, I don't think any rap song from the past 5 or 6 years has any place in being one of the greatest songs of all time... at least none of the ones i've heard.

I agree. Rap at least used to have a meaning and a purpose, but now it's mainly a bunch of crappy songs with no purpose at all. It went mainstream and the record companies pushed lame artists.

Agreed. I am actually 140 times more angry over this list, than over the Top 100 Guitarist list. God I hate Rolling Stone.

If anyone wants to be even more puzzled about rolling stone, have a look at their Guitarist list.

Eddie Van Halen at #70? Someone go to the Rolling Stone office and blast Eruption at them. David Gilmore at #82? Angus Young at #96? WTF????? According to that list, Joni Mitchell is a better guitarist than Angus Young, David Gilmore, and Randy Rhoads. I think that says it all.

Now I know what to read if I want my blood to boil. A Rolling Stone list!

SJR has influences of rock in it Hence Hank III's contribution to the band, sjr is so varied in genres they are the ultimate band

Hmm, I see your point. But this is mainly commercial bands. If SJR are so underground, it wouldn't be good for this Underground Image they have being in a Rolling Stone list.

HATEKORE
this list is wrong, there is no mention of superjoint ritual
Wow, the voice of reason has spoken, since a 14-year-old would certainly make a better list, since he's made independent music choices for 18 months now! Have the balls to listen to music that none of your friends listen to, and come back and write a better list...

So a band that's been recording albums for 3 years now is the best of all time? You have a lot to learn, kid.
