So the game is getting a little boring for you??? I have the solution. Good old fashioned Top Gear Challenges!!!
My older and younger brothers both decided to have a top gear style challenge with me today. So we dreamed up some rules, set up some challenges, and got to work. If you think the game is boring, you should try this with some friends. It really makes the game interesting. Maybe Kaz will take this idea to a new level???
So here are the rules. With $50,000, you need to buy a new or used Front engine, Rear wheel drive car, with a 300hp limit. After going through a series of challenges, you may then use the remaining balance to tune your car and run another round to see if you made an improvement. Used cars are allowed to get an oil change prior to beginning, and this feature will not go against your balance. When tuning your car, you can buy any part, or service, as long as it is within budget (plus or minus $250).
The three cars (and personalities) were chosen:
Jeremy Clarkson: 2002 Nissan Silvia Spec R Aero (S15)
Richard Hammond: 2003 Nissan 350Z Roadster (Z33-US)
James May: 1993 Mazda RX-7 Type RZ (FD, J)
We chose to use the Cape Ring Inner course, only because the Top Gear track was not available (will be soon). You are only allowed to change transmission type (manual or auto) and all challenges were using a Logitech GT wheel.
A base run was done by The Stig in a 1967 Toyota 110S. Here are the target times:
Cape Ring Lap: 1:12.
SS7 Top Speed: 128
SS7 0-100-0: 31.7
SS7 Drag: 1:09.6
The drag and 0-100-0 runs were done in the return tunnel using the line created by changing light on the road as a start line. Drag would finish at the other line at the end.
Here are the results:
Cape Ring:
Clarkson: 1:02
Hammond: 1:05
May: 1:04
Top Speed:
Clarkson: 164
Hammond: 166
May: 162
Drag:
Clarkson: 56.6
Hammond: 55.6
May: 55.8
0-100-0:
Clarkson: 17.7
Hammond: 18.2
May: 17.7
After running these tests, we were sent off to tune our machines with the remaining budgets.
Clarkson bought sport soft tires, ECU, Intake Manifold, Racing Air Filter, Sports Exhaust, Cat Upgrade, Twin Plate Clutch, Semi Racing Flywheel and a Carbon Drive Shaft.
Hammond bought Sport soft tires, Stage 1 weight reduction, racing air filter, Cat Upgrade and Sports flywheel.
May bought Sport Soft tires, ECU, Racing Air Filter, Low RPM turbo kit and fixed sport suspension kit.
After tuning the cars, we reran some of the trials, to see who had ruined their cars. Keep in mind, no suspension tweeks were made, no gearing was changed. Only off the shelf tuning was done (things normal people can do) to make the car better. Here are the results...
Cape Ring:
Clarkson: 59.5
Hammond: 101.0
May: 58.9
Drag Race:
Clarkson: 52.2
Hammond: 52.4
May: 52.3
0-100-0:
Clarkson: 14.3
Hammond: 14.5
May: 14.7
Points totals are as follows:
Clarkson:
Untuned: 73
Tuned: 39.3
Hammond:
Untuned: 72.5
Tuned: 39.4
May:
Untuned: 69.5
Tuned: 39.4
Total:

Hammond: 111.9
May: 108.9
There it is. The first set of results from our Top Gear Challenge. Next time we are choosing the following. AWD cars, with a budget of $100,000...
And on that bombshell it's time to end. See you next time...
