I recently started to get interested in how cars work and how they perform. I downloaded some episodes of Top Gear and I have to say (from my lack of knowledge in this field) that it is pretty informative.

So how accurate is this show?

It depends on what they say... no show is 100% perfect. Is there something specific you wanted to ascertain or confirm the validity of?

I personally think the show is far from acurate, its very opinionated. That may be why it is such an entertaining show.

(I've only seen 2.5 episodes of it.) It seems far more biased towards providing entertainment then it is towards providing accurate and usefull information on the cars they're looking at. Now, I've only seen one episode of 5th gear, but if you want to know more about cars I'd say that's the one to go with. I'd also reccomend TSN's Motoring 2005, but most people reading this probably don't get that (it's Canadian)
IMO, you can get much higher quality car news/reviews in print or on the internet then you can on TV.

I hate Top Gear, only because the host liked the Jaguar XKR better than the HSV GTO ... Whaaat, I love Holdens.

Top Gear rocks...

I love Jeremy Clarkson and his cool sense of humor... He was recently, by GQ magazine, voted the 2nd worst dressed man in the UK, which, in his own words, allows him to make a "fashion statement" regarding car colors in the last issue of TG Magazine.. Highly entertaining !....

I watch it, even if I should catch a re-run....

Like everyone has said, Top Gear is fairly biased towards the personal opinions of the hosts. I'm pretty sure the hard numbers they give regarding the cars' performance are fairly accurate, though.
It's just a fun show to watch. The celebrity driver and Stig parts of the show are enjoyable as well.

5th gear is great as well. Tiff is pretty cool :)

What other show compares suspension types, supercharger types, gearboxes and generally anything. :D

It's great, very opiniated yes, but it is better than that bloody program on Motors TV that just droan on with boring crap.

It's by far the best show about cars that I have ever had the chance to see, even if we only get the highly amputated half-hour episodes here. I loved the part when they were going to see how much car they could get for £100 - hahaha.

It's BTW possible to see some of it on the official site: BBC Top Gear. Take a look at what they are doing to that Hilux - world's toughest car, litteraly! And DB9 vs TGV is also highly amusing. 👍

Me, I love the show. :) I don't get it here, of course, but I have an alarmingly large collection of episodes on my computer.. hehe. :)

As for them not being accurate.. I don't really see that. They either deal in hard fact (hp, 0-60, etc), or opinion (i.e. "this car's rubbish"). But opinion, by it's very nature, is never wrong. If Richard Hammond says a car is rubbish, who are we to convince him he's wrong? I've found that most of the time, their reviews seem quite accurate. If they say a car has cheap interiors and doesn't handle very well, I'll tend to believe them. If they recommend a car as being a great buy, I'll add it to my list of prospective new cars. Because I seriously doubt they're going to be that far gone in their opinions, that they would name a crappy car as their Car of the Year.

They have fun on that show too, like when they did the Corvette C6, Jerremy was making fun of the car all the way through because it was American and had old suspension ect but they still got the message across that it was a decent car. I'v seen some people have a go at the show for that, but all it is is fun and the message was still the same in the end, much better than the last one and decent compared to it's competition ect.

It's easily the worst automotive-oriented program I've ever seen.

Okay, maybe not the single worst. Better than the crappy ricer shows.

But still garbage.

Well, that's nice, but... why? If you're going to give an opinion, at least back it up with something.

Yeah, i reckon its awesome. My grandad lives over in the Yoo Kay and he tapes episodes and sends them over here. I would give up every minute of our crappy reality TV for just half an hour a week of top gear.

i think it is a great show. tiff is too boring to me and the guys on topgear seem more oriented to the "average joe" with their foolish comments and jokes. they do a good job with the testing sections like the worst car made segment. i was downloading every new episode the day after it aired when the season will still going on. someone make a new post when the new season starts <8- P

I like both shows, I didn't like the new style Top Gear when it re-appeared (after the BBC foolishly cancelling it) but over time I've grown to like it, well even more than the old show.

5th Gear is good also & I've always liked Tiff Needells reviews as you can tell hes enthusiastic about driving (Hes also great at it) & generally talks about the good points of a car, instead of picking the bad.

Its a win-win situation really :D

Although its a pity Driven appears to have dissapeared & the 2nd hand car program with the same bloke in before that. (Now he just does those annoying ads!)

Jedi2016
What clip is that? I don't want to download it to find out I already have it in one of the episodes I have...
Aston Martin DB9 vs. Public Transportation.. From Guildford to Monte Carlo.. Just DL'ed and watched it - Beautiful 👍

oh that is a great episode/feature. i did not like the scalliete (spelling)vs the plane as much, although i did like that horrible noise jeremy's wiper was making at highway cruising speeds <8- P

Noooooooooooo! DB9 Gearbox is slow!
I have the pictures of when i got to test drive the DB9. I'll have to scan and post them.

You probably had it on the wrong setting you can put the DB9 into a sport setting which will speed up the gear changes, thats why Jerremy didn't have any complaints about it.

Possibly. I really wasn't allowed to fool around with the car much.
But there was this real noticable lag between pressing the paddle and the engaging of the gear.

I think AM has problems with their flappy-paddle gear boxes.. Jeremy was downright brutal about it when he was talking about the new Vanquish S.

Top Gear is one of the most entertaining car shows to watch. They can create a great (funny) review even if the car is dull, boring, and slow. Just take a look at last season's episode with the Prius and also the one with Korean cars ;)
