Ok, I decided to tackle this one yesterday since I read so many people complaining about how hard it is to control the Elise, etc. The first time I drove it I was like whoooaaaaaaa, oversteer city especially if you break too hard. The key is to have smooth throttle and braking control and not to accelerate too hard out of a corner when turning.

All the assists were off except TCS which was set to 5. ABS was 0. Manual trans. DS3 controller. Managed to sneak bronze and was quite proud of that considering how much of a handful the car was to control. Then I decided I would put ABS to 1 and turn Skid Recovery on. Wow, what it difference it made. Got gold after about 20-25 minutes.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I despise this particular event. I have silver (which I gained on my millionth attempt), and won't go near it again for a long time.

I got gold easily..... The car is lively but if you can control it you can be very fast.....

The beginner was the hardest for me lol, one mistake and youve lost. Its annoying when you have such little speed to play with. Late braking and early throttle make little difference.

Using the RA menu in race to turn all the assists on is the key to this event and braking in a straight line is a good idea as well.

This event probably took me a good 20 tries to reach gold. But it was well worth it as it taught me a ton about controlling the car.

I tried doing it with TCS 0 and ABS 1 with everything else off and the best I could do was a silver. I thought I was wasting too much time on it and ended up using SRF like yourself. Managed to win by a good margin on my first attempt, couldn't believe how much extra grip / stability I had especially being commited through the follow-through consistently.

Can I ask why you don't use ABS? Surely that will slow you down a lot.

Yeah, that SambaBus challenge was a pain in the arse :)
You literally pass the first place bus about 100 metres from the finish line.....

Well, I saw that on the NASCAR challenge (don't know which one) people said that in order to get better speed, turn ABS off. I also would have thought turning ABS off would slow you down but if there is no ABS, I suppose the brakes are not as efficient and as a result, perhaps the car has more inertia going forward......?

I just cannot fathom how Lotus let PD represent their car like this. This event alone makes me never want to buy a Lotus in real life. Not that i had any intent after driving it in GT5P.

This kind of representation is worse than having the car bashed up when damage is turned on completely. After attempting this event a couple of times, I thought they were pulling a practical joke on us.

Anyway, the memory of this event is so horrible, I dare not remember how I did it, but I did get a bronze. That's all that was necessary. To everyone still struggling, it is no shame to turn on Skid recovery. Cheat the game that cheats you.

Thats wrong, if u dont use the brakes , the ABS is useless

This isn't the worst. GT Academy with the 370Z feels like it's on ice... but it's driveable and I'm in the top 50 in my region (at least the last time I checked).

The Top Gear Challenge Special Event can be done and finished in 1st with TCS 0, Skid Recovery Off, ASM Off, and ABS 1... I should know, I did it.

The reason why in Nascar challenge it is faster is it disables ASM driving aid. That is the only challenge I believe that forces ASM.

I spent forever on NASCAR not even near the front. Turned ABS off and suddenly I'm in first after half a lap easy except rammed off from behind. Will retry lotus tonight with skid recovery on.

This had me frustrated for quite some time but once I'd cracked it I can replay the events and easily place first (unless I get rammed off by the AI).

I used the same technique on both..... braking WAY later than the AI cars especially in Chicago, Hammerhead and Bacharach. Also on Chicago and Hammerhead take a much tighter line. Doing this I was able to get into 2nd place on the VW van race on the first lap so I had easily enough time to get into 1st. The Lotus challenge I find more difficult but I take first place on Bacharach.

I'm very average at the game and am using a control pad so I think if you're struggling you may need to evaluate how you're tackling the course. If your technique is wrong then you can try a hundred times and still not get it.

lol what a load of tripe, if anything it makes me want to drive the car more in real life if it handles like it does in the game. DRIFTOOOOOO!!

I'll second that. The cars that act on rails may be fast, but IRL it doesn't equate to the most fun.

I drive a SRT-4 and have a friend with a Mazdaspeed Protege. With his lower weigh he can outhandle me but it's not as fun to drive. His wife has a Mazdaspeed Miata. Both our cars smoke the Miata. If I had to pick for "fun factor" it's the Miata all the way for the same reasons as the Lotus. RWD, light weight, and moderate power means you can make it do whatever you want as opposed to FWD with LSD and more power.

My decision on cars in a game differ from my choice on the street.

Iv got gold on the elise challenge. I think it was skid recovery on , active steering mild and tcs off i was able to do controlled slides this way and won quite easily tbh.

I'm beginning to despise the top gear test track. I manged first place with the buses fairly easily, however as I moved on to the intermediate event I found the car ridiculous to drive.I've only attempted it 3 or 4 times but decided to turn it off and take a break.Another extremely difficult car to drive, that seems to be the rule rather than the exception in GT 5

I LOL at the people who brag that they did this event with no assists as it is completely unrealistic at those settings.

Completely unrealistic as in "can't be done without the assists"?

Don't make the common mistake of assuming that just because you can't do something, no one else can either.

The event is quite challenging but not impossible as everyone was saying, I got gold on my second try after I was DQ'd for going into the grass on my first run due to the massive oversteer. I like these type of events, challenging but not impossible after a couple times practicing and trying over and over until it's right. The AMG challenges are quite difficult though.

i gotta start making a habbit of just saving all my replays in this game just to show you people off who make stupid assumptions lol.

i had a tougher time with this with TC5 and ABS1

i turned everything off, including abs and found it much more manageable.

Six hours of pain with ABS 1 and TCS 1 no SR. I was going mad, and then with SR on magically gold at second attempt!!

The next day my FAT PS3 60 Gb got the Red Light of Dead and now it is in the workshop being repaired/tuned after a hairdryer trick recovery.

Gol on all the top gear challenges for me :) the key to getting gold is being smooth and I was using a DS3 controller

Golded that one without assist but ABS 1, and a lot of patience (3 hours). The key was to maintain proper driving line and traction during braking and accelerating. You have to be extremely smooth on the controls. I really felt like driving a shopping cart with an engine on that one.

It's the tyres the cars fitted specifically for this test that makes it unrealistic. The car in the test is fitted with economy tires, it should have sports tyres. It's deliberately done that way so you have to master good throttle and brake control to pass the event. I don't see the fuss though, it's a hard challenge but I managed it and I'm far from great at Gran Turismo games. You just need to try to adjust your driving style to the car rather than try to make the car drive how you want it to to. It's a good challenge if you learn from it because it improves your throttle control in other situation if you apply the control you learn from this challenge.

A challenge that's challenging, who'd have thought it.

It certainly took me a fair few goes to gold this one, although I have heard adjusting the brake bias makes this car significantly more drivable.
