- Nicest part of hell
I have a rather odd and unusual question for you guys, hope you can help me...
I've got myself a russian SMS surplus gas mask with snorkel just because I wanted it (no, not for sexual pleasure) because it was DIRT cheap and it looked like fun.
Bought it for 3 bucks after I checked if it still seals properly and if the two filters are still sealed. Comes out that it was stocked right after production and was never used again until it ''expired''. I know that it is nothing compared to todays standart but I havent found any problems with it, it seals, no leaks and a two filters which still have the seals - you cant do much wrong with 3 bucks.
I am just wondering what kind of filter it uses as I know that most filters use activated carbon what hardly ''expires'' if sealed properly.
But there are also some filters which used chemicals for protection against ammonia based chemical agents (carbon does not help here). - and some of these chemicals can be very toxic if stored longer than a decade inside the filter.
Now theres the dilemma, I dont know which kind of filter is used on my new bought mask, maybe its just full of carbon or its a dangerous chemical filter.
Any hobby chemists here?
