The Toyota FT-EV, an "electric car for the masses."

Can't say I disagree with anything they have there. If its cheap, built well, and small, it'll sell like hotcakes in bigger cities. Its based on the iQ, so I can't imagine it being too hard to produce, it sounds like Toyota is shooting for a 2012 release if its greenlight.

Not too shabby, Toyota.

I like the futuristic looks of it. And yay! to the electricity and not a hybrid engine :p

I don't quite like how common the whole electric car thing is becoming at the moment considering there haven't been any major shifts away from fossil fuel burning power stations...

Everybody and their sister has an electric car program now, and if they don't, they're promising to have them by 2011 or 2012. I give all of them credit for perusing a change this quickly, but like you said, there are a lot of other changes that need to happen first.

It is strange that the electric vehicle is going so strong now. Especially considering that they will be so unusable for a very long time due to the lack of infrastructure. Especially in America.

Nice idea. Won't actually look any different from the normal iQ when they actually produce it though, I expect.

And which in the UK don't seem to be happening very quickly. There was abit of a "oh crap" moment during the rather cold weather we've had of late. This cold weather was accompanied by a nice high pressure movement, which left us with little wind... and no operating turbines. Just when we needed them most.

The lack of infrastructure is purely down to your pathetic mains power :p 110V? What a joke! :D

However, I don't believe it's that difficult to uprate it to 220V for the use of charging an e-car. Much simpler than a Hydrogen gas network.

What would be interesting would be if Toyota equipped the little bugger with a solar panel on the roof like they're planning to for the Prius. A little bit helps, and I'd be interested to see how well it could help keep the car charged if they needed it.

Has it occurred to Toyota that solar cars don't work where they sell most of their cars? Seattle, Portland and San Fran aren't exactly known for their nice sunny weather.
