Intended as a prestige saloon automobile comparable with world-class luxury cars and moving a step beyond the Crown Eight, the Century debuted in 1967 as a car with a totally new design. The Century was capable of tremendous power almost unimaginable from its Japanese styling and its naming, relating to the 100th anniversary of Sakichi Toyoda's birth and the Meiji Centennial. It achieved both luxury and high performance.

Powered by 150-horsepower aluminum alloy water-cooled V8 OHV engine with a displacement of 2981cc, the Century was available with the newly-developed "ToyoGlide" 3-speed automatic transmission together with 3- or 4-speed manual transmission. The air suspension ensured an unprecedentedly quiet and smooth ride.
