Looking for a high-profile sports car to polish its image, Toyota is finishing up development of a Supra successor, code-named project 395.

When you think of exciting Toyota sports cars, one you can't ignore is the lovely 2000 GT featured in the 1967 James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. The new front-engine, rear-drive sports car will even borrow subtle styling cues from that icon.

Our sources suggest Toyota is looking at two distinct versions for production. One will use a 3.5-liter development of the new V6 (introduced in the 2006 Lexus GS 300), making 300 horsepower. The second, higher-intensity model could use the company's 4.3-liter V8, tweaked to give about 350 hp.

Styling features a long front deck and short rear, much like the Mercedes-Benz SLK, BMW Z4 and Honda S2000 that the new Toyota will compete against. We expect it will employ a conventional folding soft top.

Pricing will likely run close to $30,000 for the V6 (to rustle 350Z feathers) and into the low-$40,000 range for the V8. The Supra spirit will rise again!

Hmmm, I wonder if it's real or just a cheap joke because it looks beautiful IMO, better than the new Supra :indiff:

Im in dismay about the engine choice.

Nightkid, just out of curiosity, what kind of car is that in your avatar?

Also, that looks cool, the supra is really missed in this house!

I don't know if you've seen the new Supra already but this front would fit better on that hot ass of the '08 model...

That would have been better as a PM, but the answer is in his sig.

Oh, cool it just looked like the guess that car answer, but no, its not.

On topic, Why did they get rid of the Supra in the US?

New Supra -- Yay!
V6 -- Boo!
It looks pretty good -- Yay!
It's convertible-only? -- Boo!

Oh well. I'm sure it'll understeer more than its rivals and have non-defeatable stability- and traction-control systems, just like the current Lexii.

i dont understand why they dont just use a twin turbo version of the v6...i mean imo, thats what a supra is all about, not a v8...

Yep, and its still a Toyota. Too bad they couldn't build a decent sports car to save their market share these days, otherwise I'd might be interested. Given the current lineup between Scion, Toyota and Lexus, the car will probably be drastically overstyled, overflow with stupid and fun-ending technology, and offer little more than a chance to make the fanboys happy because of the lack of a true sports model.

...But when you have cars like the Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, Kappa Twins, Miata, etc all available for less than $30K with good packaging and true performance that doesn't require a computer, they will ALWAYS get my money long before some watered-down Supra wanabe.

Hello? Does any one know why they stopped with the Supra Here in the 90's?

I'd buy that with the GS450h's Hybrid system.

I'd buy that with the GS450h's Hybrid system.

Yes, and that would do wonders by completely sucking the life out of the Supra adding little to the economy of it all, and maybe adding only slightly to the performance.

Hybrid system in either engine and keep it a 6sp manual.

You guys do know that hybrid technology is just a gimmick right. It would make the car heavier, and it kinda defeats its purpose seeing as the car is a sports car. Hybrid technology is meant to make a car economical, but not the way lexus has been using it.

The V8 sounds like a bit of a bargain, but I like the styling.

The GS450h is faster then a GS430 (5.7 vs 5.2), and gets better fuel economy (28mpg vs 21mpg) despite it weighting much more (GS430: 1695kg - GS450h: 1865kg to 1930kg).

My figures claim a 0-60 of 5.9 secs, and that it weighs in at 1660kg, with average mpg at 35.

the BMW 535D also gets 35mpg whilst being a little heavier and a 0-60 time of 6.5 secs. The BMW is 30hp down from the lexus, but has 130lbft more torque.

The hybrid has its advantages in city driving, but overall I feel that its a gimmick.

They stoppped for a while I think to introduce the Celica's and MR2's and probably also to stick with "reliable" cars for a while to reach the top.

But it's coming back in 2008 👍

I say Toyota forgets their stupid "Performance Hybrid" thing and installs what this car should have: a Twin-turbo V6. Like the GT-R.

AMEN!

The Prius may be "greener" but I heard it uses more than a diesel...

...If Toyota claims to be so "innovative" with everything, why don't they build us a diesel-powered sports car then?

I think there's no need to.

Surely a hybrid is as fast as a diesel...

:irked:

Damn Toyota, what are you guys waiting for?!

Theres gonna be a diesel audi TT and BMW and audi also sell diesel coupes/convertibles which do sell rather nicely.

Word on the diesel TT. I really would like to give the car a shot, assuming of course they end up selling it in the US...
