All -

Two tidbits of news. Toyota claimed today that they will be all hybrid by 2012 (my main reason for posting this).

Hybrid cars are a joke. Who's with me? Listen to these statistics:

- $19,995 list for a Toyota Prius [compared to $9,995 list on a Hyundai Accent sedan]
- $5000 every five years for a replacement battery for a Prius [Accents use batteries that we all use, and we all can install]
- 70 horsepower [Even Accents have 96 horsepower]
- A mere 54 MPG - a joke because, for under $18,000, you could have the TDi Jetta wagon-- with double the Prius's horsepower and only three less miles per gallon.

Don't even get me started on the Insight. Are there any hybrid car fans out there besides Toyota insiders?

And...

Isuzu announced that it's stopping US production early next year, and will cut its production by 70% (100,000 units/year to 30,000 units/year). Poor Isuzu. If you've got an Isuzu (you don't), sell it now before you lose all your resale value.

The Trooper is done in the US, but they are still going to produce it in the US for the time being, but they won't sell it here - they'll just produce it in America (they are owned, 49%, by GM) and ship it to Britain and Australia. And they call themselves a Japanese company...

Honda's Passport is also dead, thanks to the Pilot, meaning that no Isuzu is worth buying anymore.

That does have a high MPG (87 combined city/hwy) but it's ugly and it doesn't say how much HP it has or anything.

I think I'll stick with my big V-8 too. :p

does that mean by 2012 the toyota supra might be Hybrid Twin Turbo. I bloody hate hybrids they stink. Pertol engines all the way.

Hybrids don't necessarily mean gas mileage.

Remember, Ford's going to introduce a 'hybrid' Escape with a 90% gas engine and a 10% hybrid engine. What a joke...

...PS, 12sec. Civic: You're right. ;)

I've read about how Toyota plans on going full hybrid in less than 10 years. I think they're hallucinating.

First of all, they certainly can't include Lexus in that plan. To do that would eliminate them from the pseudo-luxury market that they created and subsequently owned. Secondly, they need to come up with a viable solution for the Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Highlander, and the other atrocity that passes for an SUV (quick note: I actually like & respect the Land Cruiser). Perhaps something like Dodge's short-lived hybrid Durango would work, but there's a reason a hybrid truck was short lived. And third, so much for anyone expecting a long life for the new Supra they have planned. The first one due up may be another wonderous piece of machinery, but I fully expect hybridization to put a real damper on the Supra's fun factor.

Let's face it: gas/electric hybrid, hooligan-style, drive-it-like-you-stole-it vehicles are a longer way off than 10 years. If Toyota wants to become the leader in economy cars and clean cars, then they probably will hit the nail on the head in 2012. It's certainly a viable plan, but don't expect anyone from EVO giving any Toyota the thumbs up in 2013.
