Tranfering save game to new PS3

Hi, I'm giving my 60gb PS3 to my nephew for xmas as he wants a backward compatable one for his PS2 games and i'm going to get a new slimline one but i've already spent hours on GT5 and want to transfer the save game data. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

someone that understands the ps3 system better than me can confirm or deny this.

with a pc when you want to transfer from one hdd to another, you have to make an iso image of your hard drive(an iso is an exact image of your harddrive, exactly how everything thing is arranged, not a "copy") then write the iso file to the new hard drive. if you just go into your C drive and copy everything over to a new hard drive this wont work as some files cant be copied and there is some data in the formating of the drive that wont be carried over, so instead you make an iso image, which is a copy of the drive not just the files

i think this should work with a ps3 as the new ps3 wouldnt know the difference. and the gt5 save would think its in the original ps3 too

I'm not sure if it works because there are reports that the game saves are locked. That means backing up and restoring on a different PS3 wouldn't work. There is however some option in the PS3 XMB somewhere to transfer game saves with a cable connected between two PS3's.

Hi there.I'm new to gt planet and have enjoyed looking for awhile so figured i may post.Since i only backed up my ps3 I figured I'd let you know how it works .The system back up is located in the system settings. It will back up everything including copyright game saves on your system. It will as stated take about two hours depending on how much information you have stored on your ps3.Hope this helps.

If you'r going from a FAT PS3 to a SLIM PS3 all you need is an ethernet cable, steps are as follows.
Settings-> System settings-> Data transfer utility-> Follow the instructions :)
it will transfer everything exactly how it is on the fat to the slim including protected saves.

Do well!!! Thanks guys, the only other thing is then after that (and i've tested its working ok) is to format the hdd so as to delete all my account settings etc. correct?

Data Transfer might do that for you anyway, I can't remember, but yep, that's it.

If it's not formatted automatically you might want to wait until the data is safely on your new PS3 if preferable, just in case.

Yeah, this is what you need to do - the backup utility doesn't work from one system to another.

The first part you have right, though there are many ways to clone a hard drive. I tried installing my PS3 HDD in my Windows computer and it didn't recognize the hard drive and wanted me to initialize it, (Don't Do it!) you will risk losing all your PS3 data if you do.

I'm next going to connect my ps3 hard drive to a linux computer to see if the data appears there and possibly, copy the GT5 game data that way? I'm hoping the PS3 formats it's hard drive in an ext2 or ext 3 format since it used to have the Linux feature. Will report back later :)

An ethernet cable? I don't need a usb drive?

so if I'm reading this right, I can plug the ethernet cable from one ps3 to the new ps3, and run data transfer utility and it'll transfer over the cable?

/\ That's right. And as for transferring the GT5 game save, no dice as expected. I can't find any program that will read the file system (JFS?). They all say there is no partition on the disk.

Yeah, surprised no one came on here to inform you guys that you CANNOT BACKUP GT5. It is copyright locked (or something) which means you can't backup your save game nor transfer it to another ps3.

Swap out the HDD's in the two systems. I think the cradles are different, so you'll have to switch those, but other than that I think they are the same.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

The reason they didn't say that is because it's incorrect information. Data Transfer includes protected content.

hmmm, thats good to know...the crappy part is i need to decide if i should buy a new ps3 and transfer my stuff over, or not buy a new ps3 and risk ylod and losing my save game.

PD you guys are assholes.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Would be strange if the GT5 save is copywrited and i'll be really p1ssed if it is. I thought Sony invested in GT5 to sell more PS3's?

If i get a new PS3 and it does nt copy over i'll be taking it back and my nephew wont be getting my 60gb for xmas!! Plus Sony will be getting a really ****ty letter about it.

I'll let y'all know if it works!!

I decided to bite the bullet and replace my Launch 80GB PS3 Phat with a new 160gb slim.

I also plan to use my Intel X-25M 80gb SSD drive in the new PS3 and will be attempting the data transfer utility. Hopefully it will all work fine and I will report back later today with the results! (I'm level 22 so I will be really pissed if I have to start over - LOL)

I'm confused. You're going to replace the 160 GB drive that you have in the new PS3 with an 80GB one? Or did I read that wrong?

BTW, the Data Transfer Utility will work fine - it's the only way to transfer copy-protected saves from one PS3 to another, although it requires you to deactivate the sending system (You can't have the file on two systems at once).

You read it right. SSD is much faster, though.

Deny. HDDs are system locked, so if you just physically switch the drives the PS3 will want to format it.

Yes, I am going to replace the new 160GB drive with 80GB SSD - The Intel X-25M SSD drive is blazing fast compared to HD. I had it in one of my PC's as OS drive and it would boot Win 7 in a few seconds 👍

I saw in another thread that somebody else was using and SSD drive and the GT5 load times for tracks etc. were about 2x faster

Hard drives are hardware locked to each PS3, you can't swap one to another without formatting it on the new PS3.

To transfer everything from one PS3 to another use an ethernet cable and use the data transfer function (settings/system settings/data transfer utility), this will replicate the old ps3 onto the new one in full including all saves.

Once transfer is complete, on the old PS3 go to (settings/system settings/restore ps3 system) to format the hdd and restore the original pls3 to it's "as new" condition.

Update:

I backed up my Phat 80gb PS3 system and installed an 80gb Intel X-25M SSD - it formatted fine and restored everything perfect and my GT5 save and trophies are OK. Load times are about 20-30% faster and I feel better knowing my hard earned work is safe on an SSD drive.

Next I am going to install my OCZ Vertex 2 120gb SSD drive in the new PS3 slim and try the data transfer! (I had been getting the "no applicable update data error" when trying to install the 3.50 update on the SSD drive from USB flash drives but it works fine from CD)

Data Transfer was 100% successful to my new PS3 (with 120gb SSD installed) and GT5 save and trophies are fine!

Why does PD prevent game save transfers?

I have two homes and two PS3s and I have always copied my game saves to a thumb drive to move from one PS3 to the other. So now the only way to do that for my GT5 game saves is to spend a couple of hours backing up everything?

Erm i'm gpoing to sound like a thicko here :dunce:

But if you do the Ethernet Cable Backup from one PS3 to the Other do you need two TV's ?
