Tranny Trick?

I did a search and I have to admit I probably am not using it the best way - I had numerous hits on the tranny trick yet I couldn't quickly find what I was specifically looking for.

The question is this - what is the technical explanation behind the "tranny trick" so I understand how best to use it, or is it just somewhat of a quirk in the setup someone found? What makes it better than just adjusting the auto setting based on the track and modifying the final ratio only? I would appreciate an explanation on the physics behind this if they exist so I better understand how to use it.

I appreciate your input.

I don't think I am the right person to explain physics merit behind tranny trick, but this is what I know:

You need tranny trick to make a car the reach over 320mph. Normal way of gearing would limit the car speed to 300mph or 320mph.

If you like to use short gearing, tranny trick can give you shortest gearing without the need to reduce top speed. Same top speed but shorter gearing reached by reducing first gear ratio, higher speed at first gear. On car with narrow power band, short gearing can help make the engine rev stay near powerband peak.
