RRoDzaaah!
I'm fixing a laptop for a friend. How should I go about transferring files from my desktop to her laptop? The laptop does not have wireless capability.

Both computers are connected to my router (D-Link DI-624), can use my broadband connection with both, and are running Windows XP.

I suppose I would need to set up a LAN. How?

Go to control panel -> network setup wizard.

Run the wizard on both computers, and make sure you turn on file and printer sharing on her computer. Also, make sure you name the workgroup the same for both computers. Once you are done with that, create a folder on her desktop, right click on it and then left click on "sharing and security." In the sharing tab, share that folder and allow others to change files in that folder. Now, on your computer click on the start button. On the top right side there should something that says "my network places" click on it. Click on "entire network" then microsoft windows network, and then the name of your workgroup. You should now see the folder on her computer, and you should be able to copy files into that folder - they will show up on her computer. If you have any problems seeing the folder, try restarting both computers. The shared folder can take a bit of time to show up on the network.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: if that didn't help, hopefully this link will: http://www.theeldergeek.com/quick_guide_to_simple_file_sharing.htm

Thanks Minnesota for the help. Everything worked, until I got this message, when I tried clicking on her laptop icon from the Workgroup window.

ITR: Yeah, I got disconnected.

Burning it to a CD-R is the sissy way out. ;)

I want to have it connected to my network, so I don't have to waste a CD-R.

Man i set up a four computer network in my house a few months back for me and my 3 house mates. Gotta tell you win XP is not a happy bunny when it comes to networking. When we got the network setup at first, two of us had win 98 on our pcs and had no problem with them. The XPs scratched and screamed (metaphorically of course) but everythin ran ok. Since then we've got all four on XP (two new pcs) and things are ok.

Tried setting up a pc to pc link through a router for my folks over the Chrimbo holiday and couldn't get it to go. Exactly the same problem as you. I hunted around loads of fori, but none had any reasonable answer that actually work, so i gave up in the end. I would be interested to hear what others have to say on the matter.

Something that may help in the mean time is to try to link directly to shared folder on Ellie's laptop. Without being patronising, share a dir on the laptop and from the PC "Add Network Place" from the networking window (My Network Places). Type \\Ellie\SharedDIR\ in the location and give that a try. It may work, but i doubt it *sigh* Microshaft.

No, it still didn't work. Same message window.

I actually got the shared folders to work. The laptop can access both it's and my shared folders. I just sent over all of my spyware tools. But, my computer cannot access the laptop's shared folder.

Do you log on to your desktop with a username and password? Not sure, but perhaps if you set up a user on the laptop with your username. And the click on the shared folder and make sure that your username has full access.
