So the disc drive on my Slim PS3 recently died, and in anticipation of getting GT6, I decided to spring for a new 16 GB model rather than sending the old one off to the repair shop.

How would I go about swapping the 250 GB drive from my old one to the new system? I have several game saves and things on the other one, and 16 GB is just such little space.

Mechanically I know how to physically change them, but I want to know if there's some kind of backup thing I should do first?

You need to back it up to an external drive first, even if reusing the same hard drive. Otherwise it will reformat it when you turn on the new PS3 after putting the old HDD in.

Gah. That sounds like a lot more work than I wanted to do...

Yeah, it sucks. I know. I wish PS3 drives were hot swappable like on the 360 (it would at least make major system failures like the YLoD not nearly as frightening), but PS3 drives are pseudo-encrypted to the individual PS3 they are installed in and need to be overwritten if installed in another one.

The alternative is to back up your saves to a flash drive and re-download everything you've got from the PSN Store, if you have anywhere near 250GB of downloaded games though that's a lot more effort than backing up. It took me nearly a week of downloading, fortunately I have properly unlimited data allowance on my internet service.
