OK, so I'm asking one of these questions again :D Just to ensure I don't do anything wrong.

Got the save game data on a USB waiting to put on the new PS3.

Should I install GT5 on the new PS3 before transferring the data? Does the PS3 account name have to be the same on the old PS3 as the new one? or just the PSN name?

Cheers

Yes to everything except the last one :D

You can put the game save on the PS3 before you install the game, that doesn't make any difference.

Actually best to do that so once you installed the game and updates, you by pass all the beginer's beginning...Just got right into where you last saved. Thumbnails may need updating

OK, so to clarify, I don't need the user account on the PS3 to be the same, but I obviously still need to log in with the same PSN?

User Name as in the ID that you first choose to use at time of log in?

PSN ID must be the same. Trying to use your old PSN XX with a new PSN YY will not work. There will be no data saved for YY and make you start from the beginning.

The USB Save must match the PSN ID tag.

It's the same thing.

In other words, re-create the account you made on the old PS3 on the new one!

Yes, the account that you first log in with. So basically, everything needs to be the same....Making me very nervous :D

Nothing to be nervous about. If you have a duplicate USB, you know you can create as many accounts you need. Just be sure you have your old E-mail and password. Should fire right up.

Awesome.

Cheers :)

Also on a semi related note, how often would you suggest backing up your save game data? just in case of damage etc?

I have plenty of USBs lying around, so I figured once a week I'd just copy the save game data across, or should I do it more often?

Like any back up you have to answer the question. How much data are you willing to lose versus how much effort you use making backups? If you don't mind losing a week of progress in case of data loss then a weekly backup is sufficient.

And is your backup safe or should you backup the backup? With valuable data one backup on one media is not enough, but this is just a game after all. I backup weekly on USB and copy the backup to a PC at least every other week.

Considering this game is what keeps my sanity while studying, it's very important :D

Was thinking about doing a backup at the end of each game play/day.

Too obsessive?

It's your data so be obsessive. If you leave the USB drive on the PS3 like I do most of the time it's just a couple clicks so it's easy enough to do every day.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of doing.....Just trying to think how much of a handful that'll be though when I get all my accounts up and running. :D

You can only put one game save per USB disk so if you have two accounts to backup you'll need two drives. If you want two or more drives connected at the same time to your PS3 you will most likely need a USB hub.

If you copy the save onto a disk where a save already exists it will just overwrite the old one. Can't rename them unfortunately. At least not until you copy to a PC.

BTW: what was the story of the old PS3?

If it still functions, you can also save the PSN data to that PS3. Thus you can have 2 PS3 with same data, USB drive too....Granted 1 PS3 will have most current data and thumbnails.

FYI :odd: there is never enough. I over written my USB drive with ripped tickets and lost almost 100 days of trades because of it. So one cannot be to safe.

Or do what WRP001 suggested. Have yet to try that myself.

You can also create a dummy PSN account on the same PS3, and copy a backup to there.
Just in case 👍 (some don't own a USB stick )

Great, good to know! Will have to keep that in mind. I have many USB drives, so won't be a problem.

That's great to know as well! I'm going to transfer tonight or tomorrow, so will let you know if there is any problems...

Thanks for all suggestions.

I just created a new account on the same ps3 as my original account and it added all my dlc from my previous account, happy days.
But it is so tempting to use good cars early on.

Anybody would like to add me, HAGIE-GT

I just bought a new regional version of GT5 (Asia version) as I was having trouble loading DLCs into my previous (US) version. However, it seems to be treating the two versions as 2 different games, even in the same account. It is forcing me to start at level0 again, even though the folder with my previous save still exists, it is not defaulting to the previous game save. I have tried deleting the new game save, but it keeps creating a new level0 game data save for me.
