I

INF327

looking to trade in my 96 silverado for a smaller truck that gets better mileage...anyone got any opinions? not looking to spend over 20k.

I don't do trucks, but you can get the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado with 4-wheel drive for under $20000. The line is that usually, the most recent model in the compact truck segment is the best, and the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon is the most recent, though a new Nissan Frontier is due out in a few weeks.

When it comes to Fullsize trucks I'm all about Chevy. When it comes to mid-size or compact trucks, TOYOTA is the way to go. However, the new Colorado/Canyons are pretty good trucks from what I've heard and read. Those I4's and I5 motors are really good. Probably the best In-line truck engines GM has ever made. (gas that is). But I still would pick a Tacoma over the GM trucks. The reliability of Toyota's compact trucks is legendary.

Tacoma is reliable, but it's due for a replacement, and its engines are crap compared to domestic competition in both the Tacoma and Tundra.

Are you smoking CRACK! Now, maybe your refferring to HP output or something. But Toyota Engines are not Crap! The 4.7L Tundra engine is due to be replaced, it just is not powerful enough to compete anymore. Besides, with the 358ci Pushrod they run in Crafstman Truck Series, they've got to be looking at putting something similar in the Tundra and Sequoia(sp?). The 2.7L DOHC engine they put in the Tacoma 4x4's put's out 150hp, only 40hp less than the 3.4V6.

I'm actually working on the Colorado project this summer at General Motors, work school program. There are a lot of problems with em. Its still in the R&D phase. So what I suggest is a Ranger, great truck and they have a good selection of power. And if you are into the sport truck scene there are a lot of aftermarket options for em.

 BLASPHEMY!! How could you? :odd: na, j/k;)

TACOMA TACOMA TACOMA!!!!

tacomas are great pickups. Very durable, decently quick, reliable, affordable....
put it this way: there are no faults with them. :p

Dude people who buy Japanese trucks make me laugh. I have no respect for them. Japanese trucks don't even offer near the amount of stuff as American truck do.

A Mazda B2000 is superficially the same as a Ford Ranger. So, basicly, you are laughing at yourself.

Well its a Ford engine and a ford body. Just like how a Isuzu whatever is a S-10/ S-15. I'm talking Titan and Tocoma.

So basically you're saying the iForce V8 is NOT crap, but not powerful enough to compete, and that the V6 makes only 40 horsepower more than the 4-cylinder. Yeah - sound like peaches over at Toyota trucks.

Nevertheless, I was referring to power output. The Tacoma's V6 engine is probably the most reliable of all time.

This was true in the days of the Toyota T100 and Mitsubishi Mighty Max, but no more - have a look at the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra Crew Cab if you need some proof. Plus, Japanese trucks are reliable as hell - there's a reason al~Qaeda used Toyota pickups rather than GMC Sonomas.

Meh once again Doug proves me wrong

Ok, it's just you said 'Japeniese.' I thought you meant generally Japeniese trucks altogether. Ok, I think we are on equal terms here now. ;) Jus' thinking about Toyota now makes me realize that it is one of the few manufacturers that isn't part of the Big Three. Yes, it, Nissan, and the big Auldi/VW group are the only ones I can think of currently.

Yes, that's exactly what i'm saying about the iForce V8. It is a good engine. Good Technology, good reliability. The engine, in and of itself is a great engine. But, when it's competition is at least a minimum of 1liter larger in displacement, and 100+more hp, it just isn't competitive. But the engine is not crap. Got it?

And as to the 3.4L V6, yeah, it should put out more power, but it's still a good engine. As you stated. But i'm sure these new 4.0L V6's will make there way into Tacomas. It's ony a matter of time in my opinion.

And, BlazinXtreme, Start laughing at me buddy:trouble: I've got a Toyota p/u (4x2) and '77 Land Cruiser. And the P/U would have much more life left in it if i hadn't been so hard on it:( I love that thing.

Pffft I'll laugh just because you spelled my name wrong.

- Acura
- Audi
- BMW
- Honda
- Hyundai
- Infiniti
- Kia
- Lexus
- Mercedes
- Mini
- Mitsubishi
- Nissan
- Porsche
- Scion
- Suzuki
- Toyota
- Volkswagen

Making that list, it surprised me how many manufacturers are part of the big three.

Toyota's 4.7L V8 sees application in the US market in the Lexus GX470, Lexus LX470, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra. It's not class competitive in any of those vehicles - making it crap. I don't care if it's the most technologically-advanced engine ever - if it hasn't got competitive horsepower, fuel economy, and acceleration, it's no good.

You know what I find funny, if you replaced all the names of those SUV's with Bravada, S-10, Blazer, Rodeo, Etc. And took 4.7 and made it 4.3, then took V8 made the 8 a 6, it might just look like this. Oh and Toyota with GM

GM's 4.3L V6 sees application in the US market in the Chevy Blazer, Chevy S-10, Oldsmobile Bravada, GMC S-15, GMC Jimmy and Isuzu Rodeo. It's not class competitive in any of those vehicles - making it crap. I don't care if it's the most technologically-advanced engine ever - if it hasn't got competitive horsepower, fuel economy, and acceleration, it's no good.

There we go I think it fits pretty good, kinda scares me

Yeah - but the thing about that engine is that, unlike Toyota, General Motors has realised it's a crap engine and only uses it on near-death or already outdated vehicles - or, in the case of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, the engine serves purely as motivation for a buyer to choose a more powerful, better engine than the 4.3.

You're wrong on a few of those applications, though - the 4.3L GM V6 goes in the Chevrolet Astro, Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet S-10, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Safari, GMC Sierra and GMC Sonoma (S-15). The engine isn't actually used outside Chevrolet and GMC. Obviously the engine was used by Oldsmobile in the Bravada for a number of years (1991-2001, not including 1995 when there was no Bravada) but unlike GMC and Chevrolet, Oldsmobile cancelled the old Bravada in 2001 in favor of the new 2002 model. Isuzu has never used the 4.3L V6 - right now, the Isuzu Rodeo uses an underwhelming 205bhp 3.2L V6 and a very nice 250bhp 3.5L V6.

Really the Rodeo only has a 3.2? I thought GM would use the same motor since its a S-10 with a different fascia. Guess GM sold them better engines.

And I compeltly forgot about the Astro. But the only reason I brought any of that up was just to poke fun about how outdated and crappy the 4.3 is. Hopefully GM kills it after 2005.

Aren't Toyota the current leading manufacturer by volume sold and profit? In fact, I read the other day that Toyota could go out and buy GM now. For cash.

I know that Toyota passed Ford in total sales and became the 2nd leading auto manufacturer. But i didn't here that they were that big famine, but if they are that is pretty cool. Maybe Toyota will Buy GM and put some since back into those fools.

afterthought: I heard that Nissan was making the most profit per car sold. They were making like 4 or 5 grand off each car, and GM was making like 500 bucks.

Pffft you know how much it would cost for Toyota to buy GM? Plus look at it this way, GM and Toyota have done joint projects and look what happened, THE VIBE.

I'm not 100% on this, but isn't the Vibe all toyota except for the body panels? i wouldn't really call that a "joint" project. I would call that GM riding Toyota's coattails....

It was a joint project, the Vibe and Matrix I believe, there is also a Toyota Vibe.

Isn't it true that Merc is in partnership with Chrysler? As in Diamler-Chrysler?And I also heard that Mitsu through German relations is related to Dodge.Just tellin' you what I read.

Chysler and Mitsu do have a relationship, look at the Talon and the Eclipse. Pretty much the same thing. So they have done some joint ventures.

And I know they have something to do with DSM, but I'm not the guy to talk to about that.

Well, i've never seen a Toyota Vibe, much less heard of one. Not all cars that appear from two Manufacturers are joint projects. Like i said, sometimes it's just one riding on the others coattails. And from what i've heard about the Mitsubishi and DC connection is that Mitsu is in serious trouble and DC is not going to throw them a bone. So I think DC owns Mitsu. Apparently Mitsu has been losing money for like the past 3 years. I'm sure one of our esteemed GTP members will come along shortly and give us the exact rundown;)

And a 3.5. And Isuzu's been using the 3.2 for years - it was first used in the Trooper in the late 1980s and, beginning in 1993, it replaced GM's old 3.1L V6 as the larger of two engines in the Rodeo and has been used in the Rodeo ever since. Though never used in the original Isuzu Amigo (1989-1994), it was optional in the Amigo between 1998 and 2000 and also from 2001 to 2003, when the Amigo was renamed the Rodeo Sport and acted as a 3-door base Rodeo.

The Trooper used the engine until 1997. In 1998, it was dropped in favor of the better 3.5L engine, the same one currently optional in the Rodeo and standard in the Axiom.

And I compeltly forgot about the Astro. But the only reason I brought any of that up was just to poke fun about how outdated and crappy the 4.3 is. Hopefully GM kills it after 2005.

I actually like its status as the base engine for the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado - basically, it makes people buy larger engines to avoid it - not a bad idea.

The Vibe (and twin Toyota Matrix) are produced by Toyota, but the development for the project was joint. Pontiac makes more money off the car than Toyota, but it's okay - beginning in 1989, the Toyota Corolla was also sold by GM as the Geo Prizm (1989-1992, 1993-1997, and 1998-2002 as the Chevrolet Prizm) and GM never made half as much money on that as Toyota did.

Isn't it true that Merc is in partnership with Chrysler? As in Diamler-Chrysler?And I also heard that Mitsu through German relations is related to Dodge.Just tellin' you what I read.

Actually, that list has got a few problems. I left Suzuki on the list despite their being basically controlled by General Motors, and I took Subaru off the list even though GM doesn't have much of a stake in them. Obviously Ford doesn't own Mazda but their stake is the largest at the present time, so Mazda got left off the list. Mitsubishi isn't owned by Chrysler anymore - DaimlerChrysler recently got sick of pulling Mitsubishi out of jams and pulled its cash out; it's clearly the worst mass-market Japanese maker by anyone's definition of 'worst' so it makes sense. Don't look for it to be final for a few more months. And Mercedes is part of the big three, of course - that's my mistake.

Well, i've never seen a Toyota Vibe, much less heard of one.

It doesn't exist - Toyota's Vibe is the Matrix, which is built by Toyota on the Corolla's platform in Canada.

If the Silverado is still reliable, and doing what it was designed to do, You will actually lose money on a trade to something that gets better mileage.
$27,000 is right at 13,500 gallons of gas, which is somewhere in the neighborhood of 270,000 miles at just 20 MPG.
If you drive 100 miles a day, 5 days a week it'll take more than 11 years for you to break even on the deal.
However, if you just want a new truck...:D
A "turn of the century" Ranger or S-10/S-15 can be had easily for under $7,500. And that's being generous with your money.
If you happen to be cheap, I saw an '01 Ranger on a Used Car lot around the corner for $5,000. That leaves you with $22K for customization.👍
