Hi

I hope there is somebody that can help me. I would like to purchase a set of Turtle Beach RK – R8

I would like to know if I connect everything to a PC with all relevant soft ware would I be able to get surround from the PS3 via an optical cable going into the S/PDIF optical input with an optical adapter (outlined on the diagram).

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you know that if you Google Turtle Beach RK – R8, this thread is the first result? :P

Anyway... It appears that you should be able to connect the unit to your PC through the USB to configure all the settings and then connect the PS3 through the optical S/PDIF. Page 28 of the manual shows a guitar connected so I'd imagine the PS3 should be similar. The downside is it looks like mic support for the PS3 is crap, so if you were planning on using that, I'd do some more looking.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks TB I knew I could count on you. I’m not to worried about the mic as I hope one day GTPlanet will offer a chat link and then run the mic through the PC.

But do you think there will be 5.1 from the PS3 coming out of the SRM to the Headphones?

The PS3 can output up to 5.1 over optical (you need HDMI for 6. or 7.1) and the unit can, obviously, output 5.1 to the headphones. The numbers are all there, but as I've never used one before, I can't say for sure if it all works together or not.

I agree all the numbers are there. I’m happy to purchase a set it’s just if it doesn’t work what do I do with it, maybe GTPbay. Haha.

I was hoping to bump into somebody here that maybe has a set and can give me feed back.

Thanks for help TB.

There are plenty of people on GTP that are into headphones. One of them may have tried a 5.1 setup and can give you better answers than I have. I've considered a 5.1 headset as I typically play when my kids are sleeping and would like more than my stereo headphones can offer, but I have as of yet taken the plunge. That and I seriously doubt the financial department (read: wife) would approve said purchase.

Good luck and if you do decide to go through with the purchase, do us a favor and report back your findings. :)👍

5.1 headphones are a gimmick. The sources are so close together that they'll mix into stereo anyway. You'd be better served with a better quality set of audiophile cans. A good pair of headphones and an amplifier to bring them to life will make you happy.

I've thought that, as well, but wanted to hear it from someone else. Maybe I'll look into a pair of better-than-came-with-my-Walkman* headphones.

*Yes, the tape player version. :P

Hi just thought I would share some information with regard to the Turtle Beach AK-R8 headphones with the SRM Advantage.

The setup:
I have setup the SRM with all necessary software to a computer running XP and the sound from the PC is great, nice functions and good sound quality unfortunately this is not what I wanted to achieve. I was hoping to connect the PS3 to the SRM via optical in to get surround sound from the PS3 to the headphones.

Due to the SRM unable to shakehands with the PS3 at 48 KHz I need an external DTS, DD decoder with optical in and out which has been very hard to locate or expensive.

The next thing I was thinking is there any software programs that are able to do playback in real time, and this is where my question comes to you guys for help and would I need a good processer to achieve this?

I just can’t understand why it so hard to get true surround through a set of headphones, surely there is a demand for it.

Sigh...

You can't get 5.1 on a headset. Marketing guys would like you to believe that so you can shell out tons of money for it, but it's not happening.

Go to headphone.com and look for full-size headphones that you think you'd like and that they recommend. Anything they rate 5.0 out of 5 you'll be happy with. Then you can buy a nice amplifier or amp/dac (digital audio converter) combo instead of spending money on all this gimmicky 5.1 crap.

I've just started watching F1 (movies, TV and DVDs) on my PC with these AK- R8 and I can tell you that to hear the cars in the back round and sounds that you would most likely only hear if you had a surround setup, and this is why I'm so adamant to get these headphones to work with the PS3. I have had the luxury in the past to have a 5.1 setup but due getting older and wife I'm unable to have what I want and settle for True 5.1 headphones and I'm sure there are plenty of gentlemen that can relate.

Back to my question is there software that can do play back in real time?
