Hello all,

I had an e-mail from Novatech that shows the latest deals. One was of a USB TV digital tuner which I thought could be quite ideal to have and watch on the computer and possibly record.

Until I remembered that I require subtitles as I am quite hard of hearing and watching programmes that has heavy amount of voice overs and/or obscured faces are quite challenging to follow for little ol' me.

Is there anything out that that can actually show subtitles while showing the programme relatively well? I find that the first sign of programmes not having the best quality is the subtitles starts showing odd missing letters before the sound and picture quality then falls to an unacceptable level.

So basically I am just asking for any suggestions to a good quality TV tuner, either internal or external for a desktop computer, can either record or not. I am slightly tempted by HD quality, but realise that it would put the price to quite insane levels and one would need an extremely good signal for that...Which I don't think I have.

I'm not actually aware of any Freeview HD TV tuners on sale at the minute, so you're pretty much stuck with standard definition for now I'm afraid - trust me, I've been looking ;)

I use this PCTV Nanostick thing personally, and found it to be pretty good throughout last year - particularly as I managed to get a reasonable signal even just using the diddy stick-on-a-window aerial. Well I say 'use', what I really mean is 'used' as it seems to have decided that after 10 months of faithful service it's had enough.

I can confirm that it's fine with subtitles though - I used it through Windows Media Center and it always used to switch on subtitles when I muted it for phone calls and the such. In fact pretty much all should have subtitles, provided they're Freeview tuners.

The software that came with it was a bit rubbish, but as I say I always stuck to Media Center - not that it's any more reliable to be honest. I remember particularly that it has a habit of simply showing me a blank screen after rewinding a few times. Fairly irritating, I have to say.
