When speaking of ambient temperature, the only material is air.

My fault. I mistook the last statement of yours to be a general statement, and not one specifically about air since it wasn't specified. :) In the case of air your statement is certainly correct.

That's because you picked an arbitrary substance, which just happens to freeze at 273 K. The case would be quite different if you picked mercury, antifreeze, or vodka.
I picked it specifically for that reason, thinking it'd make a decent example of the (null) point I was making. Could just as easily have used an alcohol or some sort of refrigerant and got a %-change of 100-150% or so (estimating).
