1)Well, my new PC is up and running without any problems, and I now have two computers in my basement and only one modem. So, I'm wondering how I could share the connection between the two PCs. The modem goes into my old PC via USB, and a network is established between the two PCs using a CAT5 cable. I've already set up a network between the two PCs using the CAT5 cable, but I could only share files on the network; no internet to the new PC.

2)What is some good anti-spyware software that is compatible with firefox?

What internet have you got? Dsl, cable, or dialup?

Cable or dsl
Does your modem have a network port? Ifso, plug that into a router, and plug each computer into it.

If it doesn't, either buy one that has, or buy a router with built in modem like mine.

Dialup or other connection
Can't help you, sorry!

You set up internet connection sharing. I'm not on my home pc that I could walk you through it - just dig through the Network Connections thing under Control Panel.

I can't find the internet connection sharing option anywhere. I tried looking for it also through the windows help file on this, but it pointed me to a menu that doesn't exist.

Internet connection sharing via PC sucks - I've done it and it's very bad.

If you have broadband I'd recommend getting a router and sharing the connection properly. If you don't have broadband I recommend getting broadband.

He has broadband, but a USB modem.

I take it that yours has no Ethernet ports at all? Mine had both USB and ethernet...

Ours came free with tiscali internet. Just a cheapo one, powered from usb, with only two sockets: usb, and phoneline. We had to get a wireless modem because it wouldn't work on the extension cable we had used for dialup previously, and that meant me having to sit in the middle of our hallway on the floor with the laptop on my lap.

Sorry, this is way offtopic so please just ignore the post.

I couldn't have you thinking i moved a desk out there now could i?

If the computers can talk to each other (so to speak), enable Internet Connection Sharing on the one connected to the modem... Look in Windows' Help menu..

Off you go...

  1. Spend some money and get a router. A simple 2-port one shouldn't cost all that much, and its a much better way that dodgy practises like ICS.
  2. Any half decent spyware program should be compatible with any program. After all, once spyware makes it onto your computer, the browser is irrelevant. Even though the only "spyware" I get now after switching to Firefox is the odd tracing cookie from the occassional site that only works in IE. I use Adaware myself.

Getting a router will be the easiest to share the internet between two computers. You should get a ethernet port though.

Also, both Spybot and Adaware are decent and both works fine with Firefox.
