GT4 split screen is rubbish. If I could change it to horizontal, then I would. The vertical screen makes it hard to see what is coming up ahead. I also lamented the very low resolution textures in maps that I loved racing in Simulation Mode. I wanted something better.
I convinced my friend to lug his PS2 and a copy of GT4 over for some proper multiplayer gaming.
Upstairs: HDTV with component cables; sofa; pizza.
Downstairs: PC with video capture card; kitchen chair.
The previously missing detail was fantastic:
"Hey... that sign in Laguna Seca says Hmmm... I never noticed that before."
"Look! It's the same fat guy in the blue shirt over and over again in George V Paris!"
"PHOTOG! OUT OF THE WAY!" *HONK*
GT4 became a lot more fun than I expected it to be. I wish I had the capture going when I launched my Miata over my friend at Trial Mountain to claim first place. It was an otherwise clean lap.
For your enjoyment, I saved two replays encoded in H.264. In the first one, we tried certain race cars for the first time. I was very surprised by the Formula GT's 20K rpm or so redline. In the second one, we have a snippet of the Grand Canyon run. I believe my record is two times car over the cliff, seven people injured... tops.
I noticed that the replays do a very good job of making laps look cleaner than they really are. Watch 00:02:14 for example: the dust cloud masks the fact that we plowed into the fence corner. 00:01:50 to 00:02:14 looks oddly like a CG movie scene than a replay; I wonder if that is an artifact of compression and reduced frame rate.
Seattle Circuit, FGT vs. Takata DOME NSX (13.4 MiB)
Grand Canyon, Evo IV vs. Bugeye Impreza (10.4 MiB)

I am seriously considering bringing a seat for my BMW 2002 out from storage to go with one of the DFPs. 👍
