One, instead of forcing people to look through every thread ever created before they post, how about the first 1-3 pages? With the pace this site moves at, just about anything beyond page 1, and most certianly beyond page 3, can be considered dead and is only preventing new, more vigorous threads from being created.

Two, it needs a forum just for randomness. A couple of other sites I frequent have one, and in both cases they are one of the fastest, if not the absolute fastest, forums on the entire site.

And if it's against the rules to ask for this kind of stuff, well, I'm sorry. (Oops, I'm getting paranoid. See what such tight controls on threads do to people?)

We've had threads for randomness before. But, they put stress on the server & the staff along with everyone abusing it.

Well the search feature on this site is pretty good and as long as you use simple keywords you should be able to find what you're looking for.

We also have a Rumble Strip which can be used for general off topic subjects. The GT Premium forum can also be used for general off topic chit chat but that obviously requires premium membership.

Maybe you could put an example of the kind of "random" stuff you want to see, and we can then point you in the right direction.

That's why the search box is there. Take a minute or three and if something applicable comes up, post. The age of the thread is irrelevant.

It's called The Rumble Strip.

It's not.

Beaten by Mark T. At least we both said more or less the same thing. :dopey:

Specifically, I go to two diffenet sites where stuff like "This is a random thread, post here and you might get a cookie" and "ATTN: Name here, I'm currently wasting your time" would be completely acceptable.

Also, in my experience you search function is finnicky and comes up with so many half-relevant results as to be almost useless (A search for MX-5 Cup brought up not only the user-created race series but seemingly millions of random GT2 and GT3 threads. Before I searched that, I searched for MX-5 in an attempt to save time. Random GT2 and GT3 garbage abounded, but there was no sign of the user-created series.)

Whereas here they are not. Different sites = different rules.

You were searching for 2 very common terms there, so it's not surprising you had trouble finding the threads you wanted. Remember that any search is only as good as the original information and the search terms used, and that applies to anywhere, not just here.

Congratulations. You have just figured out why I made this thread.

So I'm assuming car wishlist would be a common term on this site too. So searching for one (very likely dead anyway, since it was off page 1) would have turned up more garbage.

EDIT: While I'm at it, I'd also like the either the "quote" or "report" button moved. I almost had an accident realting to daan's post.

Car wishlist is a type of thread, not a search term, and examples of which can be found simply by looking.

Oh NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The open wishlist thread has formatting rules garunteed to make a 45 second post (3-5 cars) take 5-10 minutes (formatting, millions of details, MANUFACTURER WEB LINK FOR CRYING OUT LOUD), and since new wishlist threads get locked there's no way to make a quick, informal wishlist thread where people can just post a few cars and get on with their lives.

Not that there's any hope of getting that changed either. Hmmm...

Would a less formal GT5 car wishlist be acceptable on the rumble strip or somewhere?

I'm not seeing why this is a bad thing. People having to think about what they post? Can't see the down.

Whereas the people reading it obviously have to read over the same cars again and again and again..?

And there's more of them.

Does the Rumble Strip forum deal with GT5 topics?

No.

GT5 stuff goes in the GT5 forum. Stuff with no specific subject goes in the Rumble Strip.

I'm oaky with having to think about what you post, but that guy went too far! Manufacturer web links? What the heck?

Sorry but I'm leaving for Seattle tomorrow and I don't have time to fish up manufacturer links for every car I think of.

Also sorry about the rumble strip thing but it was the only place I could think of at the moment.

Congratulations. You have just figured out why I made this thread.

This you should already know, given that you created exactly that kind of thread less than a week ago and it was locked. It was clearly explained both in the thread and the PM that was sent to you that such threads are not part of GT Planet, as such I don't see the need for you to open a thread to request information that you already have.

After reading this I did a very quick search for your post history. I noticed after a few thread closures you have started making comments similar to this at then end of multiple posts.

If it hasn't been pointed out to you before, may I suggest reading the rules so that you know them? Scroll down to the bottom of any page and you will see four links: Contact Us - Advertising Info - AUP - Privacy Policy

Click on the AUP link.

As for you wanting to the site's rules to change; Jordan owns and operates the site. He created the rules the way he wants them to be. I know you can find dozens of other online communities where you can post random nonsense, talk like u h4ve txt s1ndr0m3 b-cuz u r 1337, and even say pretty much any offensive thing you want, but this site doesn't allow any of that and those of us who don't like the lowering standards of the Internet community have found ourselves to be quite happy here.

Basically, the fact that this site is not like these other sites you have been to is why this is the only online community I am an active member of.

And out of complete curiosity, if you frequent a couple of other forums that support that behavior why is it important for this forum to do it too? You have multiple outlets for that kind of thing already. If you are here to look for Gran Turismo information, but find the non-GT stuff to be too serious for you then stick to the Gran Turismo forums. If you think that even they are a bit too serious, then maybe GTPlanet should just be a reference site for you. I don't want to say fit in or get out, but I'm also not trying to get 4chan to clean up their act so I can enjoy it more. If I don't like a site I don't hang around, if I do like a site I bookmark it, label the bookmark GTPlanet, buy a premium membership, wear the t-shirt, and settle in for four years.

I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to here, but I agree that the community has collectively developed a terribly awkward tendency to cram lots of valuable information in to a single, monolithic thread. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I've simply created too many different forums here, leading people to seek out camaraderie inside individual topics as opposed to broader forums. Then, they can't see the forest for the trees, and the rest of the community can't see the trees for the forest. Anyways, I've got some new features and forums planned which I think and hope will gradually change this mindset, so stay tuned.

GTPlanet has been around for nearly 10 years now and has been down that road before, hosting one of the largest natural vBulletin threads on the Internet. I've also provided a "Conversation Forum" for random discussion, which resulted in more degredation of morale among the entire member base. It obviously works fine for many other communities, but not here.

I'll be the first to criticize the effectiveness of our search function, but my hands are tied from technical limitations. Just keep in mind that we actually have two different search engines: one powered by Google (which is operated by entering your query in to the search form at the top of the page), and our Advanced Search page, which allows you to drill down much more effectively.

EDIT: While I'm at it, I'd also like the either the "quote" or "report" button moved. I almost had an accident realting to daan's post.
Yes, it happens all the time and it will be in a new location for the next redesign of the site.

You're right. Come to think of it, the only reason I ever joined was for the race reports. I don't know how I got mixed up in all this other stuff.

So why not post your random topics there? Surely a random topic on one forum is just the same as a random topic on any other?

And I have to say that your Roadster 4h Endurance race report was looking very promising. Hopefully you can give it a winning go after your trip.

The main reason there are duplicate threads is because peope don't know there is a search function. There really should be more threads on a single page, or a way to lt everyone know that there is a search function easier than now.

I don't know about you, but the search function is at the very top of the page for me. With the advanced option right next to it, you'd have to be blind not see it there.

I don't think it is a function of people not knowing the Search function exists. I think it's more a case of the...

thread where people can just post a few [things] and get on with their lives...

...mindset. Some people just aren't that willing/able to put too much time or effort into their research and posts.

I often have problems with search functions though I do find the search funcion on another VB powered forum a little better than this one. As I am not an Admin, I am not sure how much tweaking can be done behind the scenes to improve the search function?

I am lazy when it comes to searching but again, it is always hard (for me) to find a specific answer for a very specific question and sometimes it is good also to have a fresh take on a subject with contributions from other members even if it has been discussed before, though this applies only to certain subjects.

I guess most members do not appreicate the work that goes into managing a forum, and keeping it all tidy for all of our benefit. (me for one)
