Okay, so I have recently noticed two things lately on my wheel. (Fanatec GT3 RS V2)

#1-So whenever I am driving, and I put down my foot during a turn, or if I'm in a really long turn, (Cape Ring Loop For Example) that a sort of squeaking whiring sound will go on for 2 or 3 seconds and stop, or stop when I don't turn. It's not too big of an issue, just a little nitpicky.

#2-After playing for a bit, maybe 1 hour or so, one side of the wheel will become very hot, (the right side) and when I put my nose to the vent I can smell a burning smell. No smoke however. The other side is perfectly fine, no smell, and fairly cool. It isn't like it always smells like this, just after an hour or so. All the FFB is perfectly fine while this is happening. This is a little bit of a bigger issue as I'd rather not fry my wheel.

Hmm sounds like your running max Force feedback settings, am I right.

The wheel housing draws in air from the left and expels from the right so the right side does get hotter.

The squeak sounds like the belt under tension from high FF.

Hope that helps.

Edit to add. I never run my wheels at max for two reasons.

1. Probably wear out quicker.
2. I have a shoulder injury.

If it wasn't for 2 I would probably ignore 1.

If your wheel gets hot I would recommend a rest.

So I should probably lower the FFB settings? I have it at 100 so...

But the heat and burning smell shouldn't be any problem then? It's just air?

I run at 50 in Forza which is mild.
GT5 puts down quite a high FF if I remember.

Funny thing is 100 on one game is maybe 50 on another in feel.

GT5 puts out a lot.
Maybe run a bit lower. The wheel will still get warm and make sure you fan is on too.

Alright, how do I check if the fan is on?

I'll set it at 60 or 70. Maybe higher for slower cars.

From memory turn in the wheel and let it calibrate.

Hold down the right hand side buttons. The buttons have 4 functions hold the lower 2

It will say off or on.

Do this after power up and not in PC,PS3 or xbox mode.

Pretty sure that's right.

Download the manual of Fanatecs site. There's lots of useful functions that you probably don't know about.

If your wheel is fairly new, after about a month you might need to re-centre it.

Mine was off centre by about 5degrees after a few weeks. I put it down to the fact the belt drive was just bedding in.

Can't remember the combination of buttons but it's possible.

ALright, I turned the fan on. THanks for all the help! Now off to go download the manual!

Nooo. Turn it on mate.
It was probably on by default, it was just a precautionary mesure to check it was in fact on.

Oh, did I say off, I meant on. Yeah, by default it was off, it's a lot cooler now after playing.

My fan was on by default, interesting. It gets pretty loud at times, seems to have three levels that I know of. It says in the manual that if it gets too hot it will cut the FFB to a very low level until it cools, but that's never happened to me. I tend to get worried and give it a rest for a couple of minutes once the fan reaches its loudest level. I don't know if it's going to hurt it to keep on going, but I don't really want to take chances.

I don't remember seeing anything in the manual about that ability to check/set the fan on or off.

GT5 does really heat it up fast though, on max FFB it only takes maybe 15 minutes before the fan cranks way up whereas I can drive for a good hour on rFactor with it. I turned the FFB strength in GT5 down to 3 or 4 and have the wheel on 70-80, that seems to make it last a lot longer and it still seems to have plenty of feeling. Oh, I also turned down the wheel's centering spring force to -3, that seemed to help as well.

So nice that you can save multiple setups for multiple games or road/race cars.

I own the Carrera, and it gets a little hot under the collar in Race '07 with FF set at 100%. Granted it's nothing like you are describing.

Still, it's always nice to have to compromise when spending over $300 on a product like that.
