Was checking the NASA website for info on the shuttle launch that is happening friday, and came across this. It's amazing that on a typical day over 5,000 airplanes are in the air at the same time. 
There's even a part in the video to show the what the air travel looked like on September 11th, 2001, before and after they grounded all the flights.

Edit: Thought I would add a story to this. When I was on my connecting flight from Phoenix to Charlotte for the Orlando trip, I was looking out my window and another plane passed right underneath us about 1,000 feet down, maybe less. Scared the crap out of me.
